Sony PlayStation 3 tops Microsoft Xbox 360 in sales for first time; Nintendo Wii still leads

“Sony’s PlayStation 3 video-game console topped Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in U.S. unit sales for the first time in January, but the Redmond company said its sales were hurt by supply shortages,” Todd Bishop reports for The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

MacDailyNews Take: Does it really matter what a company that will say anything says?

Bishop continues, “The PlayStation 3 sold 269,000 units for the month, according to statistics released by the NPD Group market research firm. That was just behind Nintendo’s Wii, which sold 274,000 units, NPD said. Microsoft sold 230,000 Xbox 360 consoles. ‘We certainly believe that this is an anomaly,’ said Microsoft spokesman David Dennis of the Xbox 360’s third-place finish.”

MacDailyNews Take: That’s also what they said when the space shuttle blew up.

Bishop continues, “Sony, in a statement, pointed to progress in areas including movie studios’ embrace of the Blu-ray next-generation DVD format, which the PS3 uses.”

MacDailyNews Take: Microsoft, in stark contrast, sells HD DVD players for its third-place console which, we hear, you can get really, really cheap nowadays.

  1. Good to see the Xbox 360 finally starts it’s trip down the ranks. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> I think the whole format war is certainly going to take its toll on it.

  2. I, myself own a PS3 – it’s pretty fantastic, actually. Anyways, a friend of mine, who I work with came over, and looked at it, and loved it too. He has since, bought a PS3, and SOLD his XBox 360, via eBay, when – and get this – it was shipped back to him from getting repaired. It had the 3 red lights of death!

    The PS3 is unbelievable…

  3. “… but the Redmond company said its sales were hurt by supply shortages,”

Perhaps the Redmond company would have had more supply if XBOX 360 hadn’t been plagued with the Red Ring of Death which caused units needing replacements. :p

  4. Hey MDN, Why is it so hard to believe that this is an anomaly? Why would Microsoft lie? I’d really like to see you back your accusations up with facts. Microsoft’s focus on the end user, goodwill & fairness towards competitors, and gentle nurturing of technology industry partnerships speaks for itself.

I can’t wait to see the ‘MDN Take’ for the ‘Zune overtakes I-Pod in sales’ story. Should be any day now—or is MDN too cowardly to publish that one?

    Your potential. Our passion.™

  5. I don’t understand why MDN has to be against Microsoft on all fronts? Sony builds crappy technology: Mini-Disc, Beta Max, Playstation. When the first Playstation came out there were massive failures and no one complained, yeah Sony! Now everyone wants Sony to beat MS. Microsoft will always be a billion dollar company and a major player. When the Nintendo first came out, the original NES, it had major problems. Everyone knows you have to blow in the cartridges, and play with the system to get them to work, but no one cares. Wake up, unless you own stock in AAPL then shut up about competition or other companies. You guys are insane. Blu-Ray vs. HD, Sony vs. Microsoft, lets make the Wii number number one. This is senseless. We are consumers, nothing more.

  6. When You Know Who® up there pops up with some mindless pap, I just skip over it and move along to the next comment.

I’ve been doing that since I first read his nose-picking drivel several months ago. There are maroons like this everywhere.

  7. God, you guys really are ridiculous. Like whatever said, you guys don’t care what it is, if it means Microsoft is not perfect, you’ll attack like a pack of hungry wolves! This has absolutely nothing to do with Apple. This name of this site would be more appropriate if it was MicrosoftSucksDailyNews (MSDN: hmm, that’s familiar ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> ). To call Microsoft out just shows your ignorance: you have no idea whether or not they have suppy shortages, or where they’ll fall next month. To be honest, the XBox is a year older than the Nintendo and the Sony and is still selling like crazy! Now THAT’s impressive!

Oh, and your use of shuttle disasters as an analogy is pretty tasteless. Congratulations on being named Assholes of the Day.

  8. Well, I enjoy playing my son’s Xbox 360 (going for a second take on Bioshock) even if it is made by Microsoft. Hey I use MS keyboards too. The WII is fun, but doesn’t have the visceral and tense combat games found on others. Have not played the PlayStation. My problem with the Xbox is that it sounds like a Bell Jet Ranger is hovering in my living room when its on.

  9. Another post from the Screw Bang®.

    Another post I didn’t read.

I have absolutely no doubt it was some desperately witty retort.

Whenever I’m here I’ll goad the worm and see how many times I can get him to post replies. Dickless worms like him are so predictable. I laughed out loud when I saw he’d posted again.
