CNET’s Reisinger: Apple’s Leopard will open the Mac OS X floodgates and embarrass Microsoft

“As many of you are aware, I think Windows Vista is a blunder. And with its annoying UAC system and horrifically slow operation, it won’t take long before the majority of home users agree with me. If the recent figures showing Mac OS X is already gaining market share is any indication of the future, look for Leopard to outsell Vista by a staggering margin,” Don Reisinger blogs for CNET.

“Simply put, Mac OS X Leopard is one of the most significant operating system achievements we have witnessed in years. Not only does it add functionality that Microsoft could only have dreamed of, it does so in a snappy environment that doesn’t annoy you with pop-ups asking for permission or all of those security threats we have come to know (and hate) in Windows,” Reisinger blogs.

“Unfortunately for Microsoft, the cards have been dealt and the future of the operating system market is beyond its control. Vista–its workhorse for the next three to five years–is the only thing standing between Microsoft’s command of the operating system market and Apple. But unfortunately for Microsoft, Leopard is a superior product on a ‘cool’ computer,” Reisinger blogs.

“With the release of the iPhone and its subsequent success, Apple has enjoyed record-setting profits, a significant increase in Mac market share, and continued success in the PMP market. Simply put, Apple is easily the most favored company in the industry. And while Leopard is more of an evolutionary jump than a revolutionary jump, it’s enough of a change to justify its purchase,” Reisinger blogs.

“Leopard was released at the right time. With Apple dominating headlines and becoming a company in vogue, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Mac sales jump far beyond expectations in the coming months. And once that happens, Leopard will start its rise and take a significant share away from Microsoft,” Reisinger blogs. “Believe what you will, but with sluggish sales and an outright condemnation on the part of retailers worldwide, Microsoft is in trouble.”

MacDailyNews Take: If Microsoft isn’t embarrassed by now, they’ll never be. Regardless of their shamelessness, all derivative schlockmeisters are destined to eventually meet that bitch named Karma.

  1. Personally, I wouldn’t mind if Macs stayed below 10% market share, as long as Apple has the bucks and vision to keep on keepin’ on as they’ve been doing. I have no problems with Macs not being the majority. I love mine; what everybody else uses doesn’t affect my life.

  2. Personally, I like to Zune Tang’s remarks! Our world wouldn’t be so happy without the idiot remarks and uninformed comments without him/her. I probably think Zune’s a girl myslef, probably pubescent. Just found a place for attention. Poor troll…… ahhhhh, poor troll

  3. 1. Leopard is one of the best personal computing operating systems ever.

    2. Vista is one of the worst personal computing operating systems ever.

    3. Leopard could become the dominant personal computing operating system if it were available to be installed on any and all (or at least those with the minimum hardware requirements) personal computers without license violations and complex hacks.

    4. Apple will NEVER license Leopard (or any other species of the Mac OS) for use on a non-Apple computer.

    5. Therefore, Leopard can never become the dominant operating system on non-Apple computers.

    6. As good as Apple computers are, they can never possibly satisfy the needs of the entire computing community with only 5 basic models, four of which essentially can’t be customized.

    7. Therefore, Mac OS will never become the dominant operating system on all personal computers.

    8. Sigh.

  4. Also, it seems to me that the other thing that is holding back Mac OS is that there is a glaring omission in the Mac product line: a stand-alone customizable machine with slots and without a built-in monitor but without the overkill power of the Mac Pro. Basically the guts of the iMac in a traditional PC case.

  5. Why is so much energy spent bashing MS? So Redmond is clueless. What else is new! Why not focus on more productive tech news here instead of a “we’re right and you’re wrong” rag. Getting a bit boring seeing the repetitive nature of either Microsoft or Laura Goldman remarks.

Let’s get back to product rumors where the real juicy material exists. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  6. “If the recent figures showing Mac OS X is already gaining market share is any indication of the future, look for Leopard to outsell Vista by a staggering margin.”

This is quite possibly the stupidest comment ever committed to print, except for the average government press briefing. It’s not whether one OS is whiz-bang and the other is a dud, it’s the *installed base*, and MSFT owns it. It will take years for their position to erode, if ever; while XP withers, Vista will come to occupy its place in the market. For the foreseeable future, OS X is a lovely also-ran, whatever its technical merits.

  7. Why would they be embarrassed? Do they really care about their product. They find many other ways of getting people to update. Two or three years from now XP will just about have gone away and Vista will be the most widely used OS. They are just fine with that. If they cared enough to be embarrassed, they would make better products. They can squeeze out a steamy pile every five years and the money machine will force it to grow. This is why their OS sucks, it doesn’t have to be good to sell, they have other methods.
