Apple Mac on the rise among U.S. college students

According to a recent survey by SurveyU.com, Dell is currently the most popular computer brand among college students while Apple is building momentum due to the strength of their student purchase program and the halo-effect of the iPod.

SurveyU is a survey research organization that has established a representative panel of college students within the United States who share their opinions on a wide range of issues. The SurveyU community has been meticulously constructed within the United States. Our bottom-up methodology enables levels of accuracy on campus, state, regional and national levels that were previously impractical – either online or offline.

The success of Apple’s student program is a significant contributor to its on-campus momentum, with more than 4 out of 5 (83%) of Mac-owning students having purchased
their Mac under a student plan that includes an iPod with Mac computers sold to students. Slightly less than a third (30%) of Dell’s collegiate sales are made under a student plan, while the remaining computer manufacturers have not fully leveraged the power of student purchase programs.

The impact of the iPod on computer purchase decision-making is undeniable, with current iPod owners more likely to be current Mac users (29% versus 23%) as well as future Mac purchasers (52% versus 44%). Computer brand choice varies by gender, with female collegians more likely to choose Apple, Sony and Toshiba and male college students preferring Alienware, Dell and Lenovo brands. College students are mobile and their choice of desktop versus laptop reflects their demand for portability. More than 4 out of 5 college students use a laptop as their primary computer.

“US College students have spent an average of $1,290 on their computers, resulting in more than $22 billion spent by those currently in college.” said Dan Coates, co- founder of SurveyU, in the press release. ‘”Given that colleges are swelling to accommodate the massive Millennial generation, PC manufacturers would do well to get in front of this critical consumer segment.”

One thousand online interviews were conducted between Thursday, October 18th 2007 and Sunday, October 21st, 2007. Respondents participate in the SurveyU panel of U.S. college students which has been meticulously constructed to represent college students nationally. Results were weighted to reflect the demographic composition of college students nationwide according to statistics published by the NCES (National Center for Educational Statistics).

  1. Pure speculation upon the reason for the numbers. Wrong. The mistaken assumption here is that they are all the same apples. Not apples and oranges. The reason kids are buying Apples computers is that they are way better. Young people tend not to have as much brand allegence because their memory does not go as far back. They also tend to know the new great thing. Apple is one of those these days. It is not the halo effect or the student purchase program. Duh!

  2. I did a lot of dumb stuff in college too. It’s a time for experimentation. Luckily these kids will enter the world of employment where they will discover the magic of Windows and Microsoft’s absolutely wonderful suite of office applications.

Imagine the disappointment in returning home to your toy MAC after rocking Excel on the Compaq in your cubicle. My suggestion is sell your MAC as soon as you can (if you can get anything for it) and get a magnificent Windows machine like you’ll use at work.

  3. I know I’m nit picking, but can anybody in the UK that goes to university spell the word university, or treat the capital city with a proper noun?
When I go on British forums I’ve found that the grammar and spelling are abysmal. In the U.S. people tend to make an effort to appear intelligent by not making errors all over the place and making themselves look uneducated, but in the UK they’ve given up bothering.
If you thinc I’m being an ass think wat opinian you’d have of mdn if they did lots of crappy tiping.

  4. @notshaun:

The term ‘uni’ (with or without capitalisation) is rapidly becoming a British colloquialism. It’s actually an Australian term which is gaining credence through too many students watching Neigbours – an Australian soap for those not in the UK.

  5. It’s about those appallingly low entrance standards at the college you went to. Do you think they will ever raise the entrance requirements there?

It must be embarrassing when the bell curve the professors are trying to grade on is practically a vertical line in the 30 percentiles.

  6. British students speak sms-english nowadays, that’s why.

Most of the UK is in the dark ages when it comes to computing, so they behave like Windows was only just invented. Also why the Government and the BBC as so locked in with Microsoft…

  7. “… female collegians more likely to choose Apple, Sony and Toshiba and male college students preferring Alienware, Dell and Lenovo brands.” Alienware? Here’s a clue fellows. Your future employers don’t care about your game playing skills. So put down that beer, give your games machine to your little brother, and crack those books. And get that Mac while you’re at it. It’ll at least suggest discernment and intelligence on your part.

  8. for an australian seemingly the holy grail of speech is to monosyllabalize EVERYTHING if possible -> hence university becoming uni (it’s two syllables but you’d have to appreciate the effort from 5 to 2 isn’t bad!- economizing!).

  9. The article says females prefer Apple & Sony while males prefer Alienware and Lenovo? Excuse me, who the fuck voluntarily chooses a Lenovo computer? Lenovos are the computers they give orphans and issue to prisoners in Guantanimo. I can’t believe any man in his right mind exercising his free will would choose to wield a Lenovo.

“In the U.S. people tend to make an effort to appear intelligent by not making errors all over the place and making themselves look uneducated …”

OMG! you have got to be kidding! BTW, your run-on sentence doesn’t help your argument one iota.

As a former educator I have noticed is that people 50 and older received a decent education, those under 50 have not. The school system began to fall apart when it decided to coddle not discipline children. A mind that has not experienced discipline will not develop self-discipline.

  11. Two words, Steve Jobs. Without Steve and his teams, Apple wouldn’t recover.
For Zune Tang, How does feel to be second class citizen.
Mac was first to have graphic interface since 1983 with Apple Lisa, and it took Microsoft Windows 95, 12 years to catch up with Mac and it took 6 years for Microsoft Vista to catch up with Mac OS X (2001). Since Mac is base on Unix, Mac don’t get virus or spyware/malware.
By the way using Microsoft office is waste of cpu. Microsoft Office is not an exciting application. I used pro apps on my mac eg. Photoshop, Illustrator, & Final Cut Studio. In post production
majority people used Mac because they are easier to used and have lest problem and they are beautiful to used. Lucky I didn’t buy my first computer using Windows.
Thanks Steve for keeping Apple inc healthy.
