Apple faces lawsuit based on Greenpeace’s ‘toxic’ iPhone Report

“The Center for Environmental Health announced that it is suing Apple based on research found in the Greenpeace [toxic iPhone] report,” Charles Starrett reports for iLounge.

“According to the Center, California’s Proposition 65 law states that products exposing consumers to phthalates or other chemicals known to be reproductive toxins or carcinogens must carry a warning label,” Starrett reports.

“The iPhone does not. ‘In general what we try to do is encourage the manufacturers through a negotiated settlement to reduce the use of these chemicals,’ said Caroline Cox, spokeswoman for the Center for Environmental Health. ‘That would be our goal with Apple,'” Starrett reports.

  1. Unless you plan to EAT the iPhone, winfantroll, STFU.

GreenPeace and their “ilk” go after Apple in this matter for one simple reason: only THAT company is in the news. MSFT, DELL, SONY, et al., are so quickly becoming irrelevant in the grand scheme of things that filing a lawsuit against them would produce nothing but yawns. (Thank Gawd for Europe kicking Microshaft’s ass on a daily basis.)

GreenPeace = headline-grabbing, aging hippies living off their parents’ hard work (and their own trust funds). Nothing more.

iPhone Contains Cyanide! Bromide! Formaldahyde! RAW SEWAGE! –Handle carefully!
Our friends at GreenPeace have once again outed Apple as a “toxic polluter of note”!
… and where is their pollution? In you pocket! That’s right, right there! If you are one of the rubes who was unfortunate enough to buy one of these DeathPhones that is!

Missed call: the iPhone’s hazardous chemicals
The concerned citizens at GreenPeace ask:
“When will promises of a greener Apple bear fruit?”

    See the complete report here!

As a concerned citizen, a father, a member of Mankind! I implore Apple to stop the ravaging of our planet, the fish kills, the species endangering, the wanton disregard for the health and welfare of our families, Just for a phone! A stupid phone with bodily fluids smeared all over it from all that unsanitary “touching”!
…”We recomend that you wrap it in recycled paper, put it outside, then call your counties’ Hazmat team!”

Join with our friends at GreenPeace, stop Steve Jobs! stop Steve Jobs! stop Steve Jobs! C’mon! stop Steve Jobs! stop Steve Jobs! stop Steve Jobs! C’mon! stop Steve Jobs! stop Steve Jobs! stop Steve Jobs! stop Steve Jobs! ….

  3. ….and so the lawyers get richer. Frivolous lawsuits only hurt those that are legit. Greenpeace does the so-called research, and these clowns sue? For what? Does anyone really believe they’re going to grow a tumor or a third ear as a result of using an iPhone?

Apple is getting hit with bukkshit suits left and right because of their size, power, influence, etc. And this makes people nothing but jealous. Fuck them.

  4. You know they complain about the soldered on battery, but if it were consumer serviceable then they would all end up a land fill – at least this way when you send in your phone to a service center to replace the battery it will be disposed of properly. Sounds like a pretty responsible plan to me..

  5. Anyone who trusts Greenpeace research w/o independent confirmation is a fool. Besides, I’m sure their proposed “settlement” will include “contributions” to their buddy environmental nonprofits, who will in turn direct THEIR settlements back to them. And that’s the state of today’s environmental movement today. Driven by, with, and for PR&fundraising;, regardless of the merits.
    Sad, very sad…

  6. Greenpeace is not so greenly-responsible themself.

We need a board to over see and judge them.

    Where will this ever end.

Thx greenpeace for forcing Apple to make shiny screens of glass.

Ooops sorry Apple that was a typo. Pls make shiny screens out of GRASS. Someone must be smoking some hep while typing that memo. Golly. Still glasss is freindlier then plastic.

  7. You idiots trust Apple to sell you a nontoxic product?

More than we trust Greenpeace to “protect” us. Absolutely.

So what next? The NRA becomes the definitive source of firearm safety research?

This suit had better get laughed right out of court.

  8. Greenpeace will never, ever, receive another penney of contributions from myself, or any of my friends. Instead of donating time to my local recycling center I intend on re-purposing my time to spreading the word to denouce Greenpeace at all times.

  9. Lawsuit happy, GREEDY people trying to have a feeding frenzy on Apple’s profits. This one has got to be one of the biggest pieces of CRAP I’ve ever seen against a company. I doubt there is a cellphone out on the market that doesn’t have toxic chemicals in it. Maybe that’s why you have to bring them to a recycle center and not just trash them, YA THINK!

Nit picking on Apple because they are getting all the headlines and making lots of money where all the other computer electronics companies are barely making it. So they try and sue Apple and get headlines for STUPIDITY like this! Notice you didn’t hear anything about testing any of the million other cellphones and what toxic materials are in them. That’s because GREENCRAP didn’t test them because they wouldn’t get the headlines. Anyone stupid enough to think that Apple is the only company that might have toxic materials used to create there cellphone is obviously living on fantasy island. All electronics are toxic. Go ahead and try and eat that radio and see what happens ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
