Apple today released iMovie ’08 7.1 which addresses several areas including video and audio editing capabilities, and performance associated with opening and switching iMovie Events and Projects. This update also supports general compatibility issues, improves overall stability, and addresses a number of other minor issues.
iMovie 7.1 new features include:
• Multiple Clip Selection: Select multiple clips in order to assign keywords, paste adjustments or reorganize clips in your project faster than ever.
• Fine Tuning: Quickly refine the start or end frame for any clip without leaving the Project view.
• Still Frame Creation: Freeze the action for creating a dramatic ending or applying the “Ken Burns” effect on any frame of your video clip.
• Frame-by-Frame trimming: Adjust each clip to the perfect start or end frame using frame-by-frame precision trimming.
• Audio Ducking level control: Dip music tracks and background tracks to the perfect level as voice over or other audio comes in and out of your movie.
• Manual Audio Fades: Make smoother sounding audio transitions by manually adjusting the fade duration.
• Performance Improvements: Enjoy your video more quickly by switching between any of your Events.
• Set Duration for Transitions and Stills: Change the duration of photos or length of your transitions without accessing Preferences.
• Show Current Playhead Time: Get duration or timing information at a glance as you skim through your Events or movie.
Note: In order to install this update you will need to download the iLife Support 8.1 update first. The iLife update supports system software components used by all iLife application, improves overall stability, addresses a number of other minor issues and supports general compatibility issues.
iMovie 7.1 is available via Software Update and also as a standalone installer.

Interesting, upon opening iMovie 08 after the update it is now “optimizing movies” that I’ve loaded into the library.
You’d think that these kinda “features” woulda been in the INITIAL RELEASE!!!!!!!
What did it do before this? just show movies? as stills?
Now I want it!
Strange… doesn’t show up in my Software Update whereas the other three updates worked fine. Manual download complaints that I don’t have an eligible app to upgrade. WTF? I have iMovie 7.0.1 and iMovie ’06 installed.
Anyone else experience this?
You’d thnk that you have no clue about software development, or worked at a company that produces – well – anything. If you did, you’d have a clue that reality is a far cry from what the consumer expects to magically appear – and appear yesterday of course.
Looks like they’re addressing some iMovie complaints. I’m anxious to get it installed and check out the audio and editing improvements.
Yeah, “Huh,” if it ain’t perfect right outta the box, we don’t want it! Right? Gawd, but we hate refinements, don’t we?
Nukeman, it’s showing up in my software update. Perhaps a couple hours made the difference.
In software update, I get an iLife Support 8.1 update, but no iMovie 7.1 update. I do still have iMovie 7 on my HD.
MDN is strangely quiet. Given their vehement defence of the neutered iMovie 7.0 and that we didn’t need any of the features we called for, some of which are, lo and behold, in this version, I’m not surprised.
Looking forward to Apple adding back in the other features they took out now that we know they didn’t deliberately dumb it down.
MW: able. as in, Are MDN able to say the “W” word? i.e. “We were wrong”
JackH,
MDN is probably quiet because they already said it:
iMovie ’08 does need some more effects and a fuller feature set, but the foundation Apple has now laid is very, very strong and I fully expect iMovie to evolve and get even better over time.

Nice, necessary additions, let me know when themes are added back in and maybe I’ll try it out.
It works on Leopard now! Yey!!!!
DV video quality is still crappy
