AmTech Research analyst: Apple will sell 1.95 million Macs this quarter

American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu has reiterated his “Buy” recommendation on Apple Inc. [AAPL] shares with a 12-month target price of $185 per share.

“We find the new iMacs impressive with their thinner and sleeker aluminum and glass enclosure (similar to iPhone), new Intel Santa Rosa platform with faster Core 2 Duo processors, advanced ATI Radeon HD graphics, and lower price points. We believe the entry-level model with large 20-inch widescreen will sell particularly well,” Wu wrote in a recent note to clients.

Wu predicts that Apple will sell 1.95 million Macs in the current quarter (which would be up 10.5% sequentially and 21.1% year-over-year).

Yesterday, RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky predicted that Apple will sell 2 million Macs in the current quarter (please see related article below).

  1. There’s no way they will sell that many GLOSSY screens. I hate glossy screens. Have I told you that I hate glossy screens? Glossy screens cause global warming. I’m a bitter douchebag, blah, blah, blah.

    /sarcasm off

I hope they sell that many.

  2. That is NOT a good number for Apple as it would represent a slowdown in their Mac unit growth rate. To maintain their growth Apple would need to sell at least 2.2M Macs, perhaps 2.3M Macs.
    Here’s to hoping…

  3. looking at the MDN recent numbers, and listening to all the good press for Apple, and thinking back to school, i have to agree, 2.2 to 2.3 million would be entirely possible.

….mind you i would love to hear a breakout 2.5 to 2.6 million.

…and i would love even more to replace the family eMac with one of those new 20 inch lovelies.

MW: ‘but honey “why” do we need to get the kids school clothes? a new Mac would be much more educational!’

  4. I agree. Glossy screens just is a stupid idea. No way people will go for glossy screens. It just doesn’t give the right color. It’s too reflective. It hurts my eyes. I can see the top of my head using a glossy screen.

I hope they’ll sell more than 2M. I wish I can be one of the 2M.

  5. I wonder what ads Apple will use to help keep up the sales momentum. I think the Hodgman/Long ads were good at raising Apple’s profile with people, making them laugh, and making them think – putting over points Apple wanted people to ponder on (e.g. “Stuffed” on the crapware).

But I think the theme has a got a bit stale now and also while gently mocking the PC was a good move it would look too defensive to be always doing that. Here’s a bet they won’t do any more. I wonder if they’ll do something more like they did with the iPhone – lower key, taking advantage of showing off the aesthetics, and really showing what a Mac can do and what a pleasure it can be to use one.

  6. Ah, the numbers prediction game kicks off. I speculate that Apple will sell …

… Just check’n what the chicken livers and sheep’s intestines are indicating.
    Ok here we go.
My trusted sources indicate that –
2.315 million Appley Macaroons find nice new homes.

  7. I have to agree with the anti-glossy screen sentiment. I recently bought a matte MBP for my wife, after a side by side comparison with a glossy screen MBP at an Apple Store. But the switchers may not be like most of us who post on this site. Apple must have done the marketing studies, though I am surprised by the result.

  8. Got the new 20″ iMac the day it arrived at my local Apple store.

The glossy screen is amazingly clear and clean and colors very vibrant. It makes my old Cinema Display seem bleak and dull.

The software update this morning solved the two issues I noticed…. WoW graphics and installing WinXP Home (for one required work app!)
    GO APPPLE!!

  9. ” I wonder if they’ll do something more like they did with the iPhone – lower key, taking advantage of showing off the aesthetics, and really showing what a Mac can do and what a pleasure it can be to use one.”

i would really like to see an ad like the “here is” iPhone ad.

“here is itunes on your mac, here is document editing on your mac, here is movie creation on your mac, here is the family photos being made into a calendar on your mac. here is your new computer, a mac.”

    MW: just a “thought”

  10. You people who are so adamant about how terrible the glossy screens are must not have one or must have way too much light in your room. It just ain’t that dramatic. Has anyone hollered about the iPhones glossy screen?
2.25 million Macs is my prediction, now that the new iMac is out.

  11. We hear all this griping about the Glossy screen, from people who have not seen a new iMac in person

The post from people like “7 over” who have seen/used are all positive

I know they have a special coating on the glass, does this do something about the glare??

I will wait until I can see my self before I bash

  12. My eyes are just too old and tired for glossy screens. I spent the eighties and nineties doing everything I could to minimize glare from my old monitors. Now you yungins want to bring it back? Let me tell you something, the initial vibrancy and wow factor wears off real quick when you are actually sitting on front of the thing day after day.

Even if you manage to remove the glare from lighting sources, the reflections always remain.
