“A few months back, AppleTVHacks.net and FatWallet set up a bounty looking for a way to use an external USB drive as a primary storage for the Apple TV,” AppleTVHacks reports.
The solution has finally arrived, but keep in mind that “the patch was written for and, therefore, tested on Apple TV software version 1.0. If you have 1.1, the patch might not work,” AppleTVHacks reports.
“The patch must still allow the Apple TV to boot from its internal hard drive but only use the external USB drive as its primary storage,” AppleTVHacks reports.

Nice, if you want deal with having this feature disabled with every update.
HEY, its nice to get some news, other than iPhone for a while.
Any rumors about the Zune nano?? The MS Zune sites are a buzz with it. I guess cause there is so little else. Hmmmm, a zune nano, I wonder if it can support wireless??
I hear that it will play mini videos. ??? I wonder what else it could have going for it?? If nothing else, why would one buy it, except to rebel against Apple??? 🙁

AppleTV streams flawlessly, even from external USB hard drives mounted on the mac in the office on the 2nd floor. I don’t sync anything. Need extra storage? Add another hard drive to the mac.
I comes with a 160gb hard drive already. How much storage is really necessary?
The question isn’t how much storage you need, it’s how much can you afford.
I hate looking for a disc only to find it’s old and scratched.
bring it on.
MW= leave… as in you can leave your Discs at home, thank you.
I am with grok
I have the 40 gb one, and I was worried about storage, but w/my airport extreme “N” speed, I have no problem streaming, as I need more storage (300gb of video now) I will just add more Lacie drives
Firewire warms the cockles on cold nights.
For those of us with with 40GB AppleTV… an external option would be very useful.
For my set up at home I use my Powerbook and external harddrives to host my itunes content. I HATE that both my powerbook and my drives have to be up and running for me to watch a movie.
I would LOVE to be able to have a 500GB drive tied directly to AppleTV.
I’m with you Aldarian, this is great news for us 40gb early-adopter folks….
oh, firewire, how I miss you…
Just in case you missed it…
