First Lady Laura Bush presents U.S. National Design Award to Apple’s Jonathan Ive at White House

“The National Design Awards were presented at the White House yesterday to 10 top designers and architects, including the company that developed Photoshop, and a man partly responsible for the iPod,” Jacqueline Trescott reports for The Washington Post. “Laura Bush told the audience in the East Room that it was a day to remember ‘design’s ability to influence the way we live.'”

Trescott reports, “She said the ‘union of form and function has changed the way we peel potatoes and brush our teeth. Your design has made it more fun to go back in time and play oldies on our iPods and to really go back in time by doctoring our photos on Photoshop.'”

“The awards are sponsored by the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, a New York arm of the Smithsonian Institution,” Trescott reports.

“Adobe Systems, the creator of Photoshop, Acrobat and Dreamweaver software, received the corporate achievement award,” Trescott reports. “The product design award was given to Jonathan Ive, the senior vice president of industrial design at Apple. Products under his supervision include the iMac, iBook and iPod.”

  1. Let’s get our priorities straight here.
I think Laura has the best rack of any modern First Lady.

Also, she doesn’t depend on astrology for her outlook or turn her husband off so much that he wants to screw anything but her.

That makes her tops in my book.

    I’ves said enough.

  2. You lost the point of my post.

I didn’t lose anything. I understand you completely. I just think that given the history of comments on MDN when the thread has the slightest hint of politics would make your appeal seem somewhat naive (not in a bad way). It was either focus on that or express some ironical statement to highlight your use of ALL CAPS and exclamation marks in your noble plea.

I appreciate MDN deleting the comment that got me involved in this thread and my retaliatory comments.

  3. @Deep Thought

Not so. I had to suffer this once yesterday when I linked through to a Think Secret article and again today on this one… identical page each time.

And cut the nonsense about paying to read. Not many websites out there charge entry fees.

MDN – the ‘Windows’ of the Mac web world?

  4. I understand how people voted for Bush in ’00, but considering his incompetence, lying, fascist tendencies, and colossal bloody mistakes, how could any true American not want his whole regime replaced? He’s a fake president, fake businessman, fake Christian, fake conservative, fake cowboy, started a fake war,….. the consequences are very real. in other words… our worst nightmare is only getting worse. Kucinich-Gravel in ’08!

  5. “Correct me if im wrong but as far as i know ADOBE did not create the program Dreamweaver but Macromedia (which adobe bought not to long ago) did.”

You are correct. And for that matter, they didn’t create Photoshop either! They do get all the credit for developing it into what it has become today though. Dreamweaver, not yet. They’ve only had one release so far.

  6. @Beryllium,

“There is a Lady with elegant taste!
She knows a good thing when she sees one!!”
Oh, I don’t know about that. After all, she married George, didn’t she?”

Hey, cut her a break. She was stoned at the time and George was coked up.

  7. Good grief–grow up already. I’m no fan of George Bush but please be realistic.

George ran for office and is a legitimate target for public commentary. His wife is not. Laura has ceremonial duties as First Lady but she isn’t a politician. I think she’s been quite graceful in fulfilling her duties and she deserves praise for that.

Unlike her husband who in my view is guilty of treason.

  8. When Laura met George, he was a partying grade A student at Yale, with an impressive family resume.

President’ Bush’s speaking is about as elegant and enjoyable to watch or listen to as getting bitten by tics…

I don’t like all his moves, but I will give him this, he sticks to his convictions, regardless the way the wind blows from one day to the next. Can’t say that about congress that’s for sure.

Congress has built-in weather veins I swear!

As for Bush being an idiot, I don’t think so. He married Laura, which was just a great move – what a smart, great lady. Condi is way, way, smart, as are most of his staffers he selected. That wasn’t by being an idiot.

Talk is horrible, convictions are solid (whether we agree with them or not), and the media telling me every day he’s an idiot – I am astutely aware, and advise you not listen to something so long, over and over again, you start to believe it. It’s called brainwashing, propaganda and politics. See thought it, and flex critical thinking skills.

  9. dear MDN readers and posters. Please learn how to use basic HTML tags instead of using @ to respond to other people. It makes it much easier to read your posts if we know what you are responding to. The basic format on most internet boards is to put the person’s name in bold and then quote him or her in italics

Also, if you are going to respond to someone, pick a user name and stick with it. Most of us have been around here a while and have slugged it out with each other over various issues. Don’t be a pussy — identify yourself. Of course, MDN could solve this by giving us user accounts like every other major Mac site, but i digress …
