Apple significantly upgrades iPhone battery life, multi-touch screen to optical-quality glass

Apple today announced that iPhone will deliver significantly longer battery life when it ships on June 29 than was originally estimated when iPhone was unveiled in January. iPhone will feature up to 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback. In addition, iPhone will feature up to 250 hours—more than 10 days—of standby time. Apple also announced that the entire top surface of iPhone, including its stunning 3.5-inch display, has been upgraded from plastic to optical-quality glass to achieve a superior level of scratch resistance and optical clarity.

“With 8 hours of talk time, and 24 hours of audio playback, iPhone’s battery life is longer than any other ‘Smartphone’ and even longer than most MP3 players,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in the press release. “We’ve also upgraded iPhone’s entire top surface from plastic to optical-quality glass for superior scratch resistance and clarity. There has never been a phone like iPhone, and we can’t wait to get this truly magical product into the hands of customers starting just 11 days from today.”

iPhone introduces an entirely new user interface based on a revolutionary multi-touch display and pioneering new software that allows users to control iPhone with just a tap, flick or pinch of their fingers. iPhone combines three products into one small and lightweight handheld device—a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod, and the Internet in your pocket with best-ever applications on a mobile phone for email, web browsing and maps. iPhone ushers in an era of software power and sophistication never before seen in a mobile device, which completely redefines what users can do on their mobile phones.

iPhone will be available in the US on June 29, 2007 in a 4GB model for $499 and an 8GB model for $599, and will work with either a PC or Mac. iPhone will be sold in the US through Apple’s retail and online stores, and through AT&T’s select retail stores.

  1. I really like the optical glass upgrade. Smart move on Apple’s part.

If the Apple Sales/PR folks are as smart as I think they are, they will send out notices like this daily from now until thte 29th. Each notice would reveil a new or improved feature of the iPhone.

Hopefully one would be the storage capacity, up from 4 to 16 and up from 8 to 32. That one alone would make me bite, swallow the hook, and jump into the boat!

This stategy would just keep pumping the stock up through launch, cutting the sceptics off at the khees.

  2. Kind of close to release day to be making big design changes like that so I presume that this is just the first of many “ooops, it’s going to be even better than we said” announcements Steve has planned for this week.
Let’s see, maybe tomorrow he could announce they forgot to mention true GPS, Wednesday G3, Thursday $29.95 a month unlimited use plan and on Friday knock off a couple of hundred each on the price. I think that about covers it.

  3. Thank you! Though Greg M seems to have slipped through anyway!

Do you keep any kind of record or stats on astroturfing on here? It seems like it’s been accelerating to near fever pitch of late. I can’t imagine what competitors might be worried about…unless it’s a chair shortage in the Pacific North West.

  4. @Dion – There is no ISO or MIL-SPEC by that designation that I can find. The closest I saw was ISO 661 – that had to do with vegetable oil.

I’d love a legitimate link, but your post smells false right now.

  5. DJFred:
That really made me laugh…good one.

I think the June 28th announcement will include the iPhone’s ability to make accurate stock picks and change diapers hands free.

  6. Total publicity stunt…. A smart one, but still a publicity stunt.

Manufacturing of iPhone has certainly already begun, they didn’t just decide to change the specs at the last minute, this has been planned for some time already..

  7. With the fact that iPhone is software based I’m not ruling out the possibility that before launch Apple/AT&T will announce that the IPhone will be released as a G4 product – saves on the paperwork Apple doesn’t have to maintain two produces.

And if not when the iPhone is released to Europe apple will simple offer a free upgrade for all early buyers.

Remember to that AT&T was been working overtime on a transmission upgrade and if AT&T is spending all of that money and manpower it would make sense to simple jump to the G3 technology and save having to comeback later and redo the whole thing yet again – money well used and they get some of the competition off there back fro running a slow network.

    A win-win for all…

    later

  8. One and all can look forward to a Apple news release each and every day for the next 11 days – as Apple announces either a upgrade to a existing iPhone feature or a completely new feature

Boy is software based products fun or what…

  9. Zune Tang is back!!!

And STILL dumb as bag of doorknobs.
Zuney…if your brains were gas it wouldn’t power an ant’s motorcycle around the inferior interface of a zune.

    MDN Magic Word=lost
as in “I wonder at what age Zune Tang lost his mind”

    Apple

    Our products. Microsoft’s Flying Chairs

  10. @c1 “Let’s HOPE there’s no surprise G3, or else the iPhone won’t be legal to sell under Broadcomm’s suit.”

They’d be legal if Apple was buying Broadcomm chips and not Qualcom’s.

Anyway, this past weekend I gave my RAZR to my wife, who needed to finally upgrade from, perhaps, the last analog cell phone on the planet. So, I am committed to obtaining an iPhone, hopefully sooner than later since i am now phoneless. These upgrades are great to hear about; screen durability and battery life were two BIG potential failure points that competitors and other critics were looking forward to jumping on.

The next “One More Thing®” announcement will be that the touch keyboard has audible and tactile feedback. Or at least one can hope.

  11. Considering Leopard’s annuncement of being able to search multiple computers through .Mac integration, it’s virtually a certainty that this will be true of iPhone, as well. That likely means access to everything you have, as long as you can connect to the net. Stream music, too via wifi maybe? Anyway…

Today’s announcement is a stunt, but it’s a preemptive strike against the typical gripes expected to be thrown down ahead of the product release. Apple just shut up the two main critiques likely to be bandied about. In fact, they seem to have impressed people, causing momentum to grow in their favor. I’m hoping (but not expecting) similar pleasant surprises at release. Some cool widgets, functionality… Can’t wait. The release is going to be really fun.
