“Quanta Computer has received an initial order for five million iPhones from Apple with shipments to begin in September of this year… according to a May 29 Chinese-language Commercial Times report [which] quoted sources at Taiwan-based component makers,” Steve Shen reports for DIGITIMES.
Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry) is Apple’s current iPhone supplier.
Shen reports that iPhones “manufactured by Quanta will be similar in function to those from Foxconn but with a different outer design to fit different markets.”

I wonder what exactly about these different markets warrants such a design. Do people operate phones with their feet down under?
lol, how much can it be different?
it’s only a screen and ipod backside ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” />
iPhone B1tch!
That’s iPhone Beyotch!
I am THE MAN!
Tell us the release dates and partner for Australia!?? will it be 3 with a 3G iPhone ???
I am the GIRL!
Bamboo enclosure –> Asian market
Hardened asbestos enclosure –> Middle East market
Biodegradable enclosure –> Green Peace market
Apple keeps things simple…I do not yet believe that they have changed the outer
appearance just for different areas…maybe the languages, but not the appearance.
“different outer design” ?
Let the rumours begin …
T-Mobile?????
Lets hope not in the UK.
Several EU countries ban the practice of locking a cell phone to one carrier. If Apple tries to do what carriers do in the US, they will have more lawsuits.
Camera on the front for Europe and Japan?
Makes sense to me as these market have GSM mobile networks capable of video iChatting…
Apple can certainly sell the iPhone without subsidies, but how many people are going to pay that price?
Are all mobile phones in Europe unsubsidized?
What is the range of mobile phones purchased in Europe?
What are the expected prices for an iPhone in U.S. with and without subsidies?
Maybe they will release a Watermelon Red iPhone.
Ha, ha.
maybe it’s a second, smaller iPhone?
3G for the european market? It does require a new camera on the front of the device. Maybe that’s what they mean by “different outer design” ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
How about an iPhone for other providers besides AT&T?
I know it won’t happen, but have to ask!
The market is the cell phone companies, not the consumer. These companies compete with AT&T and they want a different looking iPhone to differentiate themselves, especially since they’ll be selling their iPhones after AT&T gets theirs out. A different look will make people believe that they’re getting version 2.0 even if the software is identical.
No camera?
They need a pink enclosure for the Asian female market.
No, seriously. Go over there and look!
YES please – a half-sized version for Asia with built-in projector beamer ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
It’ll probably be nothing more than different graphics etched ito the enclosure for different service providers.
Maybe the dingo ate your baby!
Toe sucking rules! O.K.
