I remember the likes of Jay Rice, ron, grandma and a host of others behaving in a manner which quite frankly did them no credit, responding to requests for genuine debate with poisonous and aggressive invective.

What did that man do, either as a human being or a public personality, to justify the abuse he then received from sympathisers of the new Right ?Which left-winger kicked off the spectacle of Limbaugh doing his quite frankly sickening imitation of Fox? Where was the public condemnation of that attack from Republican politicians? Where was the public apology from Fox?

When the Edwards family revealed that Elizabeth’s cancer had returned, the repulsive Limbaugh didn’t hold back on his opinion, claiming that they were “political people [who] are different than you and I…Most people, when told a family member’s been diagnosed with the kind of cancer Elizabeth Edwards has, they turn to God. The Edwards turned to the campaign. Their religion is politics and the quest for the White House.”

An unprovoked attack on a a couple who are doubtless already suffering, including a woman suffering from an incurable disease. Again, no censure from Fox.

And why do I bring this up: my view is that Limbaugh, Coulter, Hannity and the rest of the new Right’s cheerleaders act as rabble-rousers for the “grass roots” of conservative-oriented voters. As a result, as each piece of “entertainment” becomes more personal and more extreme, those who sympathize with the conservative view and who see these people feted by Republican leaders assume that this behavior is acceptable.

In other words, “monkey see. monkey do”.

What happened to all of the swaggering arrogance that said the Democrats wouldn’t get control of any of the arms of government for twenty years. Not quite so certain now, eh?
