IBM releases Lotus Sametime 7.5.1, now with support for Apple Mac OS X

Lotus Sametime 7.5.1 is a platform for unified communications and collaboration, combining security features with an extensible, open solution that includes integrated Voice over IP, geographic location awareness, mobile clients, and a Business Partner community offering telephony and video integration.

This version extends IBM’s award-winning and market-leading instant messaging and Web conferencing solution by introducing new capabilities that include point-to-point video, integration with desktop productivity applications, a tabbed chat interface, client support for Macintosh users, and server support for the Linux operating system.

System requirements:
• Mac OS X 10.4.6 (Tiger) with JVM 1.5, including patches for PowerPC and Intel
• J2SE 5.0 Release 5 (JVM 1.5).

<h2>Sweet!</h2> about time Sametime came for the Mac. Now I can finally IM with…wait, I don’t use Lotus Notes or other Lotus product…oh well, at least this means one less reason for big business to oppose the integration of Macs into their environment.

It doesn’t seem to be available for Mac to me. I signed into their “trial download” page, linked from the bottom of the product page linked to in this article. And it doesn’t list any available trial download for Mac OS X. Vapourware?

Lotus Sametime is secure instant messaging and web conferences (think Webex). It also integrates IM into Lotus Notes applications and web applications. This is for a corporate environment and not for the home consumer market. I am a Lotus Domino/Notes admin and developer who uses Domino/Notes/Sametime and am happy they finally got this updated so that it will work with the Mac. The trial they have on their site is a piece of SERVER software. Again, this is not for the home consumer but for the business market – for the IT department to install and deploy.

I have used Adium in the past to connect to the Sametime IM server at work. But, the web conferencing was not supported on the Mac, only IM via Adium.

This is just the beginning, all Lotus client software is coming to the Mac. This is great news because Lotus Notes 8 has been rewritten from scratch and is now a very sweet collaboration client, much superior to what Microsoft Outlook offers today. The only problem is that it will require modern computers to run well, something hard to find in corporate environments where they usually have very old PeeCees. If you have an Intel Mac you don’t have to worry.
