"Their new found confidance (seems more like a kind of "arogance") may stop them from truly updating the macbook consumer line in the next months because they dont feel competition from other companies ate the moment."

it's more likely they just don't have the capability to do the new designs and get them out quickly enough.

That wasn't obvious when they could claim that their chip supplier was holding them back.

Now when HP, Dell, Gateway, almost anyone actually, are bringing new technology to market faster than Apple it's more obvious.

At least Apple users are used to being behind the mainstream PC marketplace in terms of hardware performance and innovation, so being slow to incorporate new technologies won't hurt Apple as much as it would other companies.
See I'm really into macs and all, and seriously into "switching" on the very first logical chance I get from anything windows. The thing is this update is really not that great ,and not a reason to think about leaving Windows laptops for me.It seems like (and I hope I'm more than right) Apple is trying to get rid of old tech to make way for a real update along all lines in a couple of months, but with Apple there is no predicting anything.Their new found confidance (seems more like a kind of "arogance") may stop them from truly updating the macbook consumer line in the next months because they dont feel competition from other companies ate the moment.Mac OS is awsome, but is it enough to overpower outdated CPUs, extremly weak graphics and tremendous heat problems along with very odd elevated prices?

It's a dud update and deep in your calcium-deficient bones, you know it. You do know that you don't really kill a kitten if you criticise Apple right?

You _can_ like Apple and still fail to be impressed by them. I'm with iMaki.

Although I suspect the real problem here is that you don't like Apple, you lerve Apple. That's just unhealthy, and the very reason why that cute girl at Starbucks you fantasise about thinks you're a complete tool.

"So, tell me, where can I get a laptop equipped the same as the "new" Macbooks for the same price that can ALSO RUN OS X?"

That's like saying I want to buy a new car, Show me where I can get a car with a given list of features, oh, and the last thing though, it has to be a Saturn. (Macs are like Saturns, they are under-featured, their owners love them, and nobody else can understand why).

Where's the only place you're going to find that? A Saturn dealer.

"Ended with a pretty good match to the middle MacBook. The HP does have a 15-inch screen -- though the same resolution as the MacBook's 13 "

So you configured was a Macbook Pro equivalent with a 15" screen, expresscard, HDMI output, much faster graphics than a Macbook? Anyway, when I configure that machine, it comes to $1198., without the useless photo app application, and with the home premium version of Vista. The Dell Latitude's the same.

The point remains however that HP, Dell Gateway and others have all released notebooks based on the new Santa Rosa chip-set, priced at Mac levels or less, and Apple as always is lagging with getting new hardware out.

Well, they can't blame IBM any more, in the Intel world, they have to take responsibility for their own slowness to get competitive machines to market.
" 'So please show us the Windows notebook in the same price range that offers anything better that ships TODAY. '

Just go to the HP web site. Take your pick."

I did. Configured their cheapest Core 2 Duo to closely match the $1,299 MacBook (I need DVD burning).

The HP dv6500t (like the base MacBook) also comes with a combo drive, so I had to upgrade to DVD burner, upgrade processor to 2.0 Ghz (they don't go to 2.16), upgraded the HD from 80 to 120 GB, upgraded Vista, added virus protection and added photo album.

Ended with a pretty good match to the middle MacBook. The HP does have a 15-inch screen -- though the same resolution as the MacBook's 13 (I prefer the smaller size), and a better graphics card (this I'd like).

Mid sized MacBook: $1,299.
Cheapest Core 2 Duo HP: $1,386.99

I agree with 'being real'. Apple needs to use the Mobile PM965 Express chipset. It has an 800 MHz front side bus. If you are going to stick with integrated graphics, then give us the best you can. That is, allowing for heat and power consumption.
I think that Intel will really improve the performance of integrated graphics in the not too distant future. Whether in the chipset, or better yet the CPU, I believe this form of video processing will lose it's lousy reputation. At least, I really hope so.

Looks like they were clearling the inventory of old chips. I've never used a notebook and I'd say this was pretty pathetic. $200 more for black plastic? Oh, the drive is 40 gigs larger - that'd be $5 per gig, not a bargain by any means.
Re: Clyde's comment about the old days. Wasn't part of the problem with Power PCs was the delay or lack of larger chips? Guess that's why it was a big to do back then. Now the chips are available. This wasn't worthy of note, Apple.

This is a lame upgrade that is NOT competitive with the rest of the PC industry. These are NOT the new Santa Rosa chips, and there's basically nothing new about these machines except a very very minor speed bump, and a SLIGHTLY larger hard drive. And they still don't offer DVD burning in the low-end laptop. All other PC laptop manufacturers have announced plans to use the Santa Rosa chip in their consumer line, but not Apple.
Eck! To compare, I spec'd a Dell E1505 Dual Core Craptop out, (not that I would buy one). To be fair, the two are sorta neck and neck. You CAN get a dedicated vidCard with the Dell Core2. But to keep it even as possible, i bumped up the processor on the Dell to 2.0ghz.. I also added Vista full blowed Premium (Since Apple does not mess around with that nonsense and gives you the Full version of Tiger). I also downgraded Dells Warranty to 1 year mail in, to make it similar to Apple's basic plan (Apple does not have in home service). Bumped the Dell up to 667 bus and RAM. Bumped the Dells Optical drive to a DVD Dl burner. (and YES the dell came with virus software subsc for 1 year, which the mac does not need). Dell came with crummy MS Works, so I added iWork to the mac... Long story short, Dell does offer a similar config, but with a dedicated vid card... But you do not get video conferencing, (iChat), or a sweet iLife-esq suite (I had to add roxio's clumsy software). The Macbook was $1178, the Dell $1272. Six of one, half dozen of the other. Trade some video performance for ease of use. Same recs as before apply, gamers, graphics pros/enthus should look elswhere. The macbook is a nice general use puter which can do a lil cross-over. I'd say its nice for my mom and aunts, but the screen is a lil small, and they are older and like "the picture" to be bigger.

Bumped the Dells Optical drive to a DVD Dl burner. (and YES the dell came with virus software subsc for 1 year, which the mac does not need). Dell came with crummy MS Works, so I added iWork to the mac… Long story short, Dell does offer a similar config, but with a dedicated vid card… But you do not get video conferencing, (iChat), or a sweet iLife-esq suite (I had to add roxio’s clumsy software). The Macbook was $1178, the Dell $1272. Six of one, half dozen of the other. Trade some video performance for ease of use. Same recs as before apply, gamers, graphics pros/enthus should look elswhere. The macbook is a nice general use puter which can do a lil cross-over. I’d say its nice for my mom and aunts, but the screen is a lil small, and they are older and like “the picture” to be bigger.
Unfortunately, the faster CPU doesn't make up for the fact that the gfx subsystem is pitifully crippled. Unfortunately, even with the modern CPU architecture, this laptop will suffer in WOW even at lowest settings. For the same game, this is probably comparable to (or worse than) a 3-year old 12" PowerBook G4.

If they had upgraded the video chip I would have bought one today to replace my wife's aging laptop. Sorry, Apple... no sale here

What's the point of this? Oh I get it Apple don't want to be seen to be standing still and this is their response to Intel's Santa Rosa and most other manufacturers announcing upgrades to their lines. What's the minimum Apple can get away with?

I'm not sure saying the MacBook range is 'competitive' with a 2 year old platform.

All they've done is upgrade the processor option one level and phase out the cd-rom (which should never been there in the first place). Other manufacturer's update their spec options all the time and don't feel the need to announce it as an update (with a big splash on their website).

I assume this is a marketing led decision to avoid giving a platform update to the MacBook before the MacBook Pro but at the same time been seen updating their range in line with other manufacturers.

Just give your customers the latest spec's and stop being so cynical with your marketing.

I don't know. It seems when they took Computer out of the name that it really meant something. This upgrade and the Mac Pro uprgrade were basicly just plug-in upgrades, allowing for minor enhancements of standard parts. With the Mac Pro there didn't seem to be any re-design at all, seeing that the motherboard could already accept the quad-core chip. This upgrade is particularly disappointing in that they didn't upgrade to the LED screens or the Santa Rosa chips. . . . Still the price is right.
Let's hope that after the iPhone gets here that we can see some of the new technologies for the computer line. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if they skip Santa Rosa and go straight to Penryn and Flash drives, . . . all enhanced with Leopard, of course.

The Santa Rosa chipset is simply a new chipset to replace the 950 chipset. It includes faster front side bus, newer integrated graphics, more USB ports, DDR2 memory support, 'N' wireless native, etc. All in all, no obvious reason other than cheaping out as to why Apple stuck with the 950 chipset again... At least they are making their 32% margin on the product I guess as I can't believe these cost more than $700 to manufacture...

Apple is losing touch with the needs and expectations of die-hard Mac fans. Sure, the specs meet the needs of the average, uninformed user, but what about the rest of us? This ho-hum trend by Apple in terms of updating its hardware with old technology is troubling, yet its consistent with lingering inability to dazzle the industry. Hardware is stagnant; its boring; its unApple. Are you listening Apple? If you aren't going to recommit to driving the cutting edge of technology, then split the company and let someone else delivery the computer-end of your business. I, for one, have lost confidence. Sure, I'll stick around, but only because there are few if any alternatives. At least stock value is rising, but certainly not because of Macs.
