“Apple may grab as much as 6 percent of the US mobile phone market in the next year – giving it a slightly stronger footprint in the market than rival Microsoft, a report claims,” Jonny Evans reports for Macworld UK.
Evans reports, “Researchers at Markitecture surveyed 1,300 mobile phone users across the US to reach its projected figures.”
“6 percent of those surveyed described themselves as likely to buy an iPhone in the next year,” Evans reports.
“Microsoft holds just 5.6 percent of the mobile phone market with its Windows Mobile software – but the Markitecture survey shows Apple could exceed that share within a year of the release of the iPhone,” Evans reports.

MacDailyNews Note: There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. – Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer (aka “Big Dummy”), April 30, 2007, USA Today
Microsoft CEO Ballmer laughs at Apple iPhone on CNBC-TV (January 17, 2007):
Heh, heh.
Ballmer is just spouting FUD, his own FUD. Microsoft is scared to death of the iPhone, and Ballmer’s comments are crystal clear proof of it.
For Ballmer, that report must come from ‘sMacworld UK’, and it stings…..
Ballmer also said this:
“But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I’d prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get.
Sure he’d prefer 60-80%, but HE HIMSELF ONLY HAS ABOUT 5%!!!!!
What a dope!
EVERYONE DUCK!
6% of the mobile is huge. i think this research is a little on the biased side. i hope it’s true though.
peace
Actually, Windows Mobile has roughly 6% of the Smartphone market – a small subset of the total cellphone market. In terms of numbers of phones, that’s around 4m units, which is a mere 0.4% of the total market.
Jobs is aiming for (and will undoubtedly get) 1% share, more than double that enjoyed by Microsoft.
What’s more, MSFT’s share has come largely at the expense of Palm. I see their sales as perhaps the most vulnerable of all to the launch of the iPhone.
This prediction assumes that MS mobile is going to stay stagnant at 5.1%. I doubt that. When the iPhone hits and is a big success as we suspect, what do you think will happen. Phone makers are going to attempt to add iPhone-like capabilities to their phones. Many are going to turn to Windows mobile for lack of an alternative. Apple isn’t going to sell them an OS. No… the success of iPhone may be the best thing that can happen to Windows mobile.
Apple is projecting 1% of 1.3 billion sales. Microsoft thinks Apple will take 2-3% market share and this firm thinks Apple will get 6%. The product hasn’t even shipped yet.
Consider the fact that the Zune didn’t eat into Apple’s share they bit into the hand that used to feed them. The iPhone will compete directly with Windows mobile so the market share that Apple gets will be from Windows. They will also add numbers to the total Smart phone market but Microsoft’s share WILL actually decline. Boy won’t that be sweet in my morning coffee.
Cheers
Yes, Ballmer is whistling past the graveyard. I’m going to enjoy watching this unfold.

Nothing would be sweeter than Apple phones beating Windows mobile in market share.
NOTHING!
doesn’t Ballmer contribute 60% hot air to glabal warming?
…if I recall the original sin ..satan got Eve to buy shares of Apple ..then Eve got Adam to buy some shares then they got rich and bought some paradise. I going to make a prediction that reflects that humble little narrative ….I predict that there’s so much psychic anticipation that by late January, 2008 after the MacWorld Expo that Jim Cramer will be talking about Apple the way he was talking about Google back in 2004 when Google was at 100. Now, about 32 months later Google’s around 470. Oh, yeah …another prediction . …the Dell Dude gets reanimated as a Mac Dude.
Ballmer has set up M$ for yet another fall. If I were a Microsoft shareholder, I’d call for his head right now. As an Apple supporter since my Macintosh 128K, I just have to laugh.
Quit talking about the iPhone! And give me my iPhone! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
LOL. It´s not even out yet and overhyped prediction after prediction. The bubble of hyped expections is so huge the iPhone is destined to be a disappointment.
First disappointment: Late…er, “delayed” delivery.
in my opinion apple is going to dominate for years and when it ends, ends good, but im a good mac user, then i believe that apple is going to have that share that they missed in the past…APPLE RULES!!!
I can’t wait for the iPHONE to come out… I’m so sick of my Palm 700W !!! Do Not Buy This PHONE!
I believe anyone who has experienced a window’s mobile phone will ditch it to get an iPhone.
“Anything you can do, I can do better. I do anything better than you.”
Hey, that’s good. I think I’ll write a tune.
It’s obvious. Balmer says iPhone is “going to get any significant market share” because Windows Mobile does not currently have “significant market share.”
> It´s not even out yet and overhyped prediction after prediction.
That’s the point. “It´s not even out yet,” but a majority of mobile phone users have heard about it and 6% are going to get one. Apple’s marketing has orchestrated a brilliant campaign where they get millions of dollars worth of free publicity for free.
Ballmer:”…we have our strategy… of making crappy products and shoving them down consumers throat, by illegal means if needed, and by golly do we know how to do that!”
Can someione smarter than myself do the math on impact to annual earnings at 1%, 2-3%, and 6%?
TIA

“doesn’t Ballmer contribute 60% hot air to glabal warming?”
I hard it might be as high as 70% or even 80%!
oh, I love this, MDN “cold” lol
The mobile industry is about 1B a year, so 1% is 10M units, 2-3 would be 20M or 30M, and 6% would be 60M
So if we average out 550 for the price that’s 5.5B dollars a year, up to 33B a year for 6%.
Apple is currently a 80B company, if they actually were able to sell 60M units a year, they would add up to ~30B a year to their company. They are already 1/3 the size of MS, this would put them closer to 1/2 that size, and growing.
