Apple to postpone Mac OS X Leopard until October in order to support Windows Vista?

Apple Store“Apple is expected to launch its next generation Leopard operating system (OS) in April, but according to industry sources, the release of the new OS will be postponed to October to allow Apple to make Leopard support Windows Vista through an integrated version of its Boot Camp software,” Ruby Huang and Joseph Tsai report for DigiTimes.

“The sources pointed out that the launch delay is not due to software design problems with Leopard but instead is attributed to Apple’s plan to have its new OS support Windows Vista through an integrated version of Boot Camp. Boot Camp is an Apple software application that currently assists in the installation of Windows XP on computers using Apple’s latest OS. The company hopes with support for Vista, Mac computers using the new OS can grab more market share, according to the sources,” Huang and Tsai report.

Now, on a slightly different tack, Jacqui Cheng reports for Ars Technica, “Our sources have told Ars that there is very little chance (“and that would be pushing it”) for Leopard to ship in late April—that is, if Apple wants to ship with a halfway stable operating system.”

Cheng reports, “‘We still have the same seed we got 2 weeks ago,’ we are told. ‘I’d say it’s barely beta, not Final or Gold Master.’ Is it possible that Apple is keeping some of its key developers in the dark by holding back a surprise, nearly-perfect build? Sure. Anything is possible. But seems like just about the worst idea ever if the company wants anyone’s software to work when Leopard comes out. This is not super-insider information either, say our sources. ‘Anybody who has really worked with a Tiger or Panther seed will know the same stuff.'”

“So can we expect a Leopard release in late April, for rizzle? I’m certainly not, and according to our sources, you shouldn’t either… When do they personally theorize Leopard will actually be ready to ship? ‘June.'”

  1. See, now this is bullshit, because even IF Leopard couldn’t support Vista by it’s 10.5.0 release, Apple will probably be cool to simply release it with the XP support that it ALREADY HAS, and add Vista support to it via a point-release upgrade sometime down the line.

It’s not a big deal, because seriously, who gives a flying fsck about Vista running natively on a mac anyway? NOBODY who bought a Mac, that’s who.

People buy Macs to get away from Vista and Microsoft. Worrying about this and taking it seriously is about as stupid as wanting to get back onto the Titanic to reclaim your lost luggage AFTER you’ve already gotten onto a liferaft, and have been safely lifted aboard a rescue ship with your life intact.

Apple’s job is to support Apple customers, NOT to support Microsoft. The fact that Apple even bothers is something above and beyond the call of duty, and if they stop, we Mac users wouldn’t be any worse off, now would we? Vista’s the iceberg that’s going to end up sinking Microsoft, and everyone knows it.

Whoever is making those rediculous claims reported in the article is probably not someone who ought to be trusted. Who knows what interests they have?

  2. Makes no sense. Integrated Boot Camp can come later as an ehancement. People are going to go ballistic if, of all things, WINDOWS is going to hold up their precious prize. It’s not a feature most even care about, but I can see Apple seeing it as a Windows Killer by making it seamless with OSX so people can truly have a one-computer-does-everthing solution. This rumor better not be true.

  3. I have no interest in running Windows–XP or Vista–on my Mac.

I’ll bet most Mac users, who are still the main audience for a Mac OS X update, feel the same way.

Apple, make Leopard the best OS you can for Mac fans, and we’ll buy it. Add the Vista patch later, if you must, but it’s just not worth the wait.

  4. FUD per the book. Why ? :
    a) iPhone. To be released end Q2’07 in the US. Needs Leopard to provide the best user experience.
    b) Vista. No mainstream so far. Why bother then ?
    c) MacOS software update. Apple is used to update OS X on a regular basis. Any new feature, including ‘important’ ones, can be added by updating the system.

    I’ll start posting Apple-related FUD stuff on my blog : it will boost my Technorati ranking ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

unless you know different inmates have and will always control the asylum. It is the nature of our psychiatric system to act superior to the inmates and they in turn see us as crazy – I side with the inmates on this

  6. Didn’t Oppenheimer say only a few weeks ago that they were still on track for a Spring release? I think he did.

    He wouldn’t be the first Oppenheimer with Da Bomb either. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  7. I disagree with those who think there shouldn’t be a login system. I wholeheartedly think there SHOULD be a login system put in place on this site. The “names” people use get hijacked all the time on this site. That anyone can use someone else’s name when posting is a disservice to those regular posters on this site, especially ones that have made contradictory, while valid, points and have been driven away because of it. That diminishes the community greatly and hurts much more than helps this site.

I think the BBR site – http://www.dslreports.com/ – has a pretty good set up with logins. You know who the regulars are, you know who isn’t registered, and who the trolls are pretty quickly, too, and they have no shortage of visitors, or divergent opinions (granted, their focus is much broader, but still). I rarely, if ever, pay any attention on that site to who has “more” or “less” posts – it’s what they say that will either make me think, infuriate me, or leave me ROFLMAO.

For me, the fact that no-one else could use my login name on the MDN site so it would be clear that any post was coming from me rather than some pimply-faced pre-teen on his tricked-out Alien machine in Waukesha would be a nice change of pace. Not that I won’t stop posting otherwise… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  8. “Vista’s market share is completely insignificant.”

Then the Mac’s market share is even less significant. There’s already more new PC’s been shipped with Vista pre-installed since its release than numbers the entire Mac installed base. Dell alone sells 16 million laptops in a bad year. Apple only sells about 2-3 million in a good year.

  9. When I read Leopard was postponed until until October because of some present lack of compatibility with Vista, I was seriously bummed. My heart rate increased, my muscles tightened, and I scowled. WTF I thought. How dare they? I don’t want to wait until Fall to buy a new computer. This Sux. This took all of about 10 seconds until I remembered the I had read about WMDs being in Iraq, Vista was going to be a killer application, and that ELVIS and Jim Morrison were still alive. Then I remembered that just because I read something doesn’t mean it’s true. Buuuutttt for those of you who believe it’s true, I will sell you the Empire State Building for say, just because you’re so nice ..$400, a seat on the board of Adobe for only $1200, just for today though, and a weekend with Selma and Angelina for $7.28. It’s TRUE. You just read it on the internet. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” /> Just joking. Selma is busy. And it’s really a seat on the board of APPLE. I’m such a kidder.

  10. why are we care about vista? why? let’s cut this crap. vista is not even secured as well. it is the inferior os system ever. as a mac user, I don’t care what microsoft does for vista. just bring leopard anyway.

  11. Well, I decided I couldn’t wait for Leopard any longer and just ordered a Mac Pro 2.66GHz and a 15″ MacBook Pro. I’ll just have to buy the “family” license (with US military discount, thanks Apple!) and upgrade those along with my old PowerBook G4 when it finally does ship.

Honestly, with Apple there’s always a reason to wait “just a few weeks longer.” I decided to bite now, and have no regrets.

  12. @grognard

“What if, and I’m no programmer so I don’t even know this is possible, But what boot camp is reinvented to allow the user to run Windows programs without a MS operating system. “

Technically, it should be possible (and seemingly great for all of us), but I would think that would be a terrible business move for Apple. Why would any company ever take the time to write an application for the Mac if they can just write one for Windows, and it will work in both places? This would lead to application development for the Mac coming to a complete standstill, and Apple forever being tied to Windows.

Anyone agree? Disagree? I’m curious what others think about that.

  13. I talked with Steve today and he said, “consider the source”.

“Its all BullSh@t, and it’s just a Microsoft wish”.

“I am trying like hell to get the iPhone out before May” Ha Ha Ha
    Another surprise for my friends.

I replied, Steve you kill me.

Just a I have a direct line to Steve thought.

  14. I couldn’t wait any longer either (the iBook was making funny noises on startup) so I went ahead and got the MacBook for my birthday…I liked the smaller footprint of 13in as opposed to 15 or 17 (who says size matters?).

As for Leopard, spring doesn’t end till June 20 or 21, so there’s plenty of time for Apple to get it together. And I can’t see them holding out just to make sure it works with Vista — heck, they advised people not to upgrade to Vista till they could ensure that iTunes would work with it, and I haven’t heard anything on that front. Why hold up their loyal Mac customers for this minor thing? They could simply release a Boot Camp update in the fall…heck, if they really wanted to put the screws to the Microsoft-lovers they could even charge $25 or something for it… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
