Apple nabs entire Elton John catalog exclusively for iTunes Store

Apple StoreSir Elton John is to make his back catalogue available for digital download, he announced today.

The collection spans four decades and comprises more than 400 tracks.

“I’ve wanted my music to be available for digital download worldwide for some time, but I knew that the entire catalogue – not just the hits – needed care and attention to be released in this way,” Sir Elton said in the press release. “Now that it’s happening, I’m pleased for the fans’ sake.”

“The world has certainly changed since Philips Records issued my first single on seven-inch vinyl – 39 years ago this month.”

The catalogue begins with Sir Elton’s 1969 debut album Empty Sky and includes the likes of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Honky Chateau, Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy and Made In England.

The star is also making his biggest hits available as mobile phone ringtones.

And a selection of his most famous video clips, including I’m Still Standing and Don’t Go Breaking My Heart with Kiki Dee, will be issued through digital music services.

The music catalogue will be available from March 26. Until April 30 it will be available exclusively from iTunes.

It coincides with the release of his new compilation album, Rocket man – The Definitive Hits.

Sir Elton has sold 200 million albums during his career.

This weekend he will perform at New York’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate his 60th birthday.

  1. How much more time is going to be spent on here offending a minority? This is a mac site so take your socio-political issues somewhere else. You might also want to consider that there might be gay people reading this board. You don’t see any anti-breeder comments on here, think about it.

  2. Why would anyone want to buy music through onlines services like iTunes?
It baffles me. All you end up with is a useless MP3.
I will stick to CD’s, thanks, something I can collect and hold in my hand….if I need an MP3 for my PC, I’ll rip it from my own CD (An MP3 is no substitute for the real thing).

  3. kim: “Why would anyone want to buy music through onlines services like iTunes?

Well, don’t be baffled, kim. That’s easy enough to answer. There are millions of customers who have bought two billion songs from the iTunes store. And then there is you. You are not like them. I think it’s more puzzling why people buy Windows PCs. But then, I keep coming up with the same answer.

“Through the end of 2006, customers purchased a total of 90 million iPods and 2 billion songs from the iTunes store.” – Steve Jobs

MW: instead – that was cool.

  4. It’s amazing to me how when the subject turns to either politics or sexual orientation we get inundated by new posters with new names. Or maybe it’s regular posters who don’t want to spread they’re bile and “tarnish” their online name. Either way, it’s a sick, sad commentary on the people who say these things.

  5. Not an Elton John fan, but it is nice to see that an artist actually put some thought into how their catalog would be presented.

Thomas Cruise Mapother: hysterical. If there were a south park episode about Elton John, surely this line would be used.

Kim: “Why would anyone want to buy music through onlines services like iTunes?

First, you do not end up with an MP3 when you buy from iTunes or the majority of download stores. In fact, there are stores that offer tracks with either lossless compression or .wav files. Second, digital music on a storage device: CD, iPod, computer, whatever. Same thing. Saying you need a CD for a collection is silly. Third, I do appreciate the differences in sound quality of compressed tracks. However, it should not be impossible for anyone with a sliver of a clue to figure out that there scenarios where a lossy file will do. An example: buying a single track out of nostalgia that will be played once a year. Why pay $10 for the CD? Not only that, but the majority of people listen to their music through computer speakers or low-end ear buds. Do you really think those people are concerned with fidelity? Those kinds of speakers are so poor that the encoding from iTunes is sufficient. Sure, if you are going to listen on a serious home stereo system, compressed files are not the way to go. However, if it baffles you why anyone would want to use a service like iTunes, then you are either willfully ignorant or barely functional.

  6. So when did the MacDailyNews boards get so filled up with anti-gay fat ass slobs?

When did MDN get taken over by four-year-olds with a grudge? There are more flames and just plain stupid, irrelevant comments posted to this forum than almost any other I’m aware of. MDN generally does an excellent job of presenting interesting, relevant articles and commentary; but all this childish banter is really boring. Please take it someplace else!

“EJ is one of THE greatest musician/singer/songwriters of our time. Period.”

You left out 50% of the reason for Elton John’s success — credit is due to his long-time lyricist Bernie Taupin. Without Bernie, you would not have the flowing poetic lyrics that is an integral part of Elton John’s music.

  8. Well, Reg pretty much kissed the yellow brick road goodbye after the ‘Blue Moves’ album, imho. Up to that point, I had everything he released-including ‘Empty Sky’ and ‘Here and There’.

    My recommendations are
    1) Tumbleweed Connection
    2) 11/17/70
    3) Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
    4) For sydneyStephen to go fuck himself and realize that I have the balls to post whatever I think as TowerTone, I don’t need no stinkin’ aliases.

  9. Might I note that Apple lead the way with enlightened hiring policies.

Kim, you bozo, you can’t get MP3s from the iTunes music store. They’re AAC. The fact that you did not know that makes me sure your point of view is pretty much irrelevent.

  13. Doesnt anyone here remember that not so long ago EJ was ripping on the iPod in favor of satellite radio that he was the spokesman for? Thats what Kim was quoting, although not very well. I believe it was covered here on MDN some time ago.

  14. @Towertone

Hmmm. Did you think I was referring to you in my post?

Check post number 9 from top. Its all your fingers except 1.

    el-Tone? see it?

It had occurred to me that it was you, but I was polite enough to give you the benefit of the doubt…
