Adobe Creative Suite 3 to be announced March 27th, not shipped; to ship ‘later in Spring 2007’

“The wait is nearly over! We can now confirm that Adobe Creative Suite 3 will be announced March 27, 2007. The company is celebrating the launch at an event in New York City that will be webcast live at 3:30pm ET. During the webcast, Adobe will reveal the features and suite configurations that make this the largest software release in Adobe’s 25 year history,” Cara Cassidy blogs for Adobe.

Creative Solutions PR @ Adobe EDITOR’S NOTE: We are announcing Creative Suite 3 on March 27th. However, the software will not ship until later in Spring 2007.

As was noted above, CS is not one app- it’s a whole suite of apps. Second, comparing a shareware game (now Universal!) to a Pro application is comparing Apples and oranges. Third, Apple’s lame but getting better X-Code has proven to be a mutha for large app developers to use- Adobe is not the only one reporting the problem. Fourth, the integration of Macromedia stuff added considerably to the load. Fifth, Apple’s eternal dinking around with API’s and such makes a developer’s job much more difficult.

WOHA!! Back off MDN!

First of all the entire software industry is adapting their codebase to work with multi-threaded cores. This is a very difficult task for programmers.

Processors can’t be made to go any faster without severe heat, so now multi-cores is the way to go to and programmers had to revise everything they knew.

Adobe for many years just added new features to their present codebase, waiting for this eventuality.

Second, Apple switched to Intel processors rather suddenly because IBM couldn’t make a cool G5 processor.

Third Apple mandated the change to X-Code, when a lot of third party code was done in other programs.

What is going to be nice when CS3 is realized is the fast speed of rendering using multi-core computers. Including a 8 core Mac Pro.

I for one welcome the change.

I’m as impatient as anyone else to get the new version of semi-non-legacy code Photoshop when it comes out. And I’m just as suspicious with Adobe linking their products together as I am with Microsoft or Apple (like losing features in iWeb because I don’t have an .Mac account). But something tells me that it doesn’t matter really. The beta of Photoshop CS3 is miles ahead of previous versions, and I’m prepared to wait until it’s done (as long as my beta doesn’t run out first).

Now what are you complaining about? You should live in the UK. These pre-announcements are the basis of Tony Blair’s ministerial toolbox. Lets just hope Adobe don’t learn that you can also make announcements as if they are new announcements, about announcements that you’ve already made. All you need to do is to rearrange the feature list. We are completely bamboozled here and explains why no-one trust the politicians about anything. It’s got so bad that if they told us that the sun would rise tomorrow, we’d apply a health dose of scepticism.

Let’s give Adobe a break. Afterall, there was a report not too long ago that Apple still has quite a bit of work to do with Leopard. Perhaps Adobe is using the extra time to fix the “nice-to-have’s”.

I think “insider” may have called it. I know several pre-press managers at large national magazine printing companies who about 2-3 years ago were told that they should start testing PC’s in the Pre-Press dept. There was alot of resistance, but they were told that Adobe was convinced that the mac was dying and they should start planning a gradual shift to a PC workflow. Adobe probably put Mac development on the back burner for a while and are now playing catch-up. Haven’t heard much recently, but have been told that there are new G5′s and Mac Pro’s in the dept. now.

priglmeier: Apple did not announce that they were going to announce going to Intel, they just announced they were going to Intel. That’s the silly part of this, regardless of whether Adobe is ahead of schedule, behind schedule or on schedule. Why the heck would anyone announce they were going to announce something?

Much of this credit belongs to Apple. It was their choice to leave Adobe completely out of the loop. Apple knew Adobe’s software development cycle.

@Insider does have it. And for those that think that CS3 is going to help sell more Macs, you must first weigh in with how many Macs were not sold because Adobe had the publishing industry turning on it’s heels and converting to Windows. Whatever else is happening, Adobe is undoubtedly playing catch-up because of a clear miscalculation on their part about whether Apple was going to continue with the Macintosh or not. It been pretty clear to me since Adobe first started developing for Windows, that they would just as soon do only Windows, if you can’t admit that much to yourself then your lying to yourself.

What makes the whole thing a bit of a hot button, I think, is Adobe’s attitude of infallibility through this whole thing – Kind of like, “…yeah, we meant to do it this way…” sort of mentality. So eventually CS3 will make it to market and all of this will go away until next time, when once again, it will become painfully evident that Adobe would really rather be doing almost anything but developing for the Macintosh. I think we’ll see this in the very first updates to CS3, when the Mac updaes come out we’ll be exactly 2-3 updates behind the Windows updates – any wager? I didn’t think so – cause that describes the way its really been since Adobe started doing Windows.

So, I guess we’re all just stuck with it until we admit we’re under the foot of yet another software aristocracy with no real alternatives. Its gotta change or its going to keep on being the same – don’t you think?

What’s the surprise here? Adobe has treated the Mac as a second-class citizen for a long time. This is why their Mac software is a lowest-common-denominator cross-platform WinMac offering. They will never integrate anything but basic OS X features.

They’ve been pandering to the Mac crowd lately with Lightroom and the CS3 beta, but it won’t last, and Windows (whether they like or hate Microsoft) is always their priority. Hey, how does the Mac community like Photoshop Elements 5.0? Oh, that’s right, it’s only been out for MONTHS on Windows, so naturally it’s not on the Mac yet.

This is the same company that got stomped by Final Cut Pro because they let it languish, and instead of competing got all whiny and deiced to take their ball and go home. Now they’re bringing it back (at least, they’ve pre-announced an announcement intended to announce just that), claiming they meant to all along? Oh, please!

Photoshop and Photoshop Elements are fine products, no doubt. But that doesn’t change the fact that Adobe drags their feet on this, and Mac upgrades in general.

I can back up sorta-inside-info. I’ve been a prepress professional working with small prepress shops, large printers, and catalog/magazine publications. Up until just a couple short years ago, speculation and “conventional wisdom” was that Apple & the Mac would soon be dead. Some shops picked up some PC’s (including, unfortunately, one I worked for at the time). Macs are back in full-swing in these industries, as it once was and should be. I haven’t heard much talk of going to PC’s recently. Sure, there are the occasional shops who use exclusively Windows stations, but they aren’t very common. Macs are once again, very very prevalent in publishing and printing.

That is the problem, caused by Adobe turning on graphic professionals by choosing Microsoft based bean counter favored crap boxes…

Serves Adobe right, taking on the color of bloated Microsoft “good enough” thinking…

If there were reasonable alternatives for Illustrator and Photoshop for graphics professionals (and I am talking about PROFESSIONALS in the print and video fields NOT the typical wannabe) we would move over…

Windows for graphics, who was smoking crack on that choice?

Adobe needs a good reaming for this crap, to be honest I would rather Apple get a few real Adobe killers on the catalog than continue to suffer with Adobe “designed for Windows, ported to Mac” crap they give us now…

APPLE – not Adobe – left Adobe out of the loop with regards to its developing Intel architecture.

APPLE had intimate knowledge of Adobe’s development process and cycle for the Mac platform.

APPLE could have given Adobe even a small nudge in the right direction.

Instead, Apple left its biggest third-party developer that isn’t Microsoft out of the loop.

So, how did Adobe “miscalculate” again?
