At least three ARM processors inside Apple’s iPhone

“Warren East, president and chief executive officer of ARM Holdings plc, has confirmed that “at least three” processor cores developed at his company are present within the iPhone from Apple Inc.,” Peter Clarke reports for EE Times.

Clarke reports, “The main CPU for the iPhone is a PXA320, formerly the Monahan applications processor from Intel Corp., now supplied by Marvell Technology Group Ltd. The PXA320 is therefore a descendant of the StrongARM processor developed by Digital Equipment Corp. under an architectural license from ARM in the 1990s.”

Clarke reports, “When asked how many ARM processor cores were in the iPhone, East said his company has a good track record of not talking about customers’ products… When asked to say if three was an underestimate or even a large underestimate, East said: ‘Apple will talk about the contents of the iPhone when Apple’s ready to talk about the contents of the iPhone.'”

MacDailyNews Note: The ARM design was started in 1983 as a development project at Acorn Computers Ltd. In the late 1980s Apple Computer started working with Acorn on newer versions of the ARM core. This work would eventually turn into the ARM6. The first models were released in 1991, and Apple used the ARM6-based ARM 610 as the basis for their Apple Newton PDA.

  1. Not surprising. With the fluidity of that interface, I figured there was some unusual power behind the touchscreen. It looked to be 200 times more powerful than a Razr but without the UI sluggishness.

  2. How many wrecks have you guys almost had because someone was driving while talking on the cell phone?
The iPhone will either help solve this problem or make this problem worse.
Billy made comment about only using one hand, but personally I think the iPhone is small enough to do the same thing…and buttons are so big and simple…only get what you need when you need it.

  3. Georgy Porgy,

I suspect this question will be moot when the iPhone is finally released. I’m sure the iPhone will have voice dialing or some sort of car mode that will make it safe to use, with a bt headset, while driving.

By the way, talking and driving without a headset is illegal in the city of Chicago.

  4. Georgy Porgy,

You must be one of those guys that blame guns

for gun violence instead of the morons wielding

them. Don’t blame the phone. I wish we would

enter an era of personal responsibility, but

it’s obviously not going to happen.

  5. It’s Deja Newton all over again!

I think the iPhone may be the future of the Mac platform. I hope we can dock it with a monitor and keyboard, eventually, and use it as our main computer. Microsofties won’t like it because it doesn’t hook up to their SCSI printer. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” />

  6. I can’t stand people who use their mobile when driving. It is ILLEGAL here in the UK and with good reason – you should be concentrating on driving your vehicle, not chatting away one handed on your phone to your mates. There have been too many crashes involving idiots on the phone smashing into the back of innocent people.

Ban phone use whilst driving. Period.

  7. “Ban phone use whilst driving. Period.”

I totally agree! We all have a limited ability to focus, no matter who you are. The cell phone industry knows it will cost them money, and unfortunately, money rules everything – until enough people stand up for what is right.

  8. By the way, talking and driving without a headset is illegal in the city of Chicago.

That’s a nice thought – and one of the only “extreme” things Mayor “Richard” Daley has done that I agree with – BUT IT ISN’T STOPPING PEOPLE from doing it. I still see people dangerously weaving & slowing to 14 MPH because they can’t talk and drive.

And since we can’t ban morons, we have to do the net best thing. See, we can’t even ban you! I guess we’ll have to ban your computer . After all, using typical conservative philosophy, since we don’t agree on something one of us must be the antichrist. I know I’m not . . .

  10. Spark

if you read the linked story it is a little more clear – he states that “ARM is in 90 percent of the world’s [mobile phone] handsets; we’re in WiFi, baseband processors and applications processors and most of the world’s MP3 players. So it’s at least three”

So just based on the funcionaluity of the phone there should be at least three ARM processors in the iphone

  11. “Exactly how did he confirm that there were at least three ARM processors?”

The article forgot to include body language.

When asked to say if three was an underestimate or even a large underestimate, East said: ‘Apple will <wink> talk about the contents <wink> of the iPhone when Apple’s ready to talk <wink> about the contents of the iPhone.’

Nudge, nudge. Know what I mean? Does your wife like photography?

  12. Phones and driving…

In Australia, as in many other countries, it is illegal to use a phone in the car unless you have a hands-free kit.

However, recent studies show that even the use of a handsfree kit provides a significant distraction and increases the risk of an accident.

The iPhone will be just as distracting as any other phone, hands-free kit or not.

  13. I agree about banning cell phone HANDSET use while driving.

Considering that the average driver is borderline incompetent when they are giving 100% attention to the task, adding a cell phone to the mix makes them an accident waiting to happen.

Most are too feeble minded to even handle talking on a headset and driving at the same time, but some of us DO have that ability. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

How many of you have seen these morons doing 20 mph in a 45 zone because they are talking on a cell phone? Sitting at a GREEN LIGHT? Changing lanes into another car? Stopping in the middle of the road for no reason? (I have seen this TWICE!)

It is sad that there are not tougher requirements for a drivers license. That would get about 60% of the population OFF the highways and would improve traffic conditions significantly.

A good 80% of traffic congestion is caused by MORONS creeping along in the LEFT lanes (Passing lanes in most states) and failing to yield the lane to faster vehicles.

  14. “I can’t stand people who use their mobile when driving. It is ILLEGAL here in the UK and with good reason – you should be concentrating on driving your vehicle, not chatting away one handed on your phone to your mates.” – Jim

Mates?! In the UK you can have more than one mate? Dang, I should move to the UK! Or Utah!

  15. “[…] Billy made comment about only using one hand, but personally I think the iPhone is small enough to do the same thing…and buttons are so big and simple…”

But the problem with the iPhone is that you will actually have to look at it to see the numbers. I know plenty of people who can enter numbers on a keypad without having to look at it.

So you’ll have everybody looking at their iPhones rather than looking at the road while pressing buttons to make a call.
