And don’t forget that Macs, as shown at WWDC, are cheaper than the competiton too. We always knew that but it was shown on black & white that it’s true. Before WWDC there was no reason to get any computer other than an Apple Macintosh for the simple reason that it is an all encompassing quality piece of hardware that runs any OS your heart desires. Now, after WWDC keynote, there is ABSOLUTELY NO reason anyone should get a computer other than a Mac. There is absolutely no rational argument against it. Anyone who tries to argue the point is in denial. They’re cheaper than the competition, look better, operate better, gives you more OS options, and, for those who want the customization capabilities, you have over one million options.

You do have to admit, though, that it sucks that Apple charges full price for a new version of OS X even for upgrades, especially when upgrades come out so frequently. If one were to buy OS X and Windows XP Pro when they both came out and get every new update for each, one would have spent $520 on OS X and $350 on XP.

You can have a better than XP experience with OS X 10.2.X. You do not need to upgrade your OS to 10.3 or 10.4 to get a good operating system. Try running XP without SP1 & SP2, especially on the net. Good luck with that.

But here’s the kicker. Every new Mac OS X runs faster on older equipment than the previous OS X. That makes the upgrade price worth it because it keeps older hardware in the game.
A bit off the topic, but worthwhile, I think. The Apple Blog has an interesting question on its site: in poking fun at Microsoft, did Apple go too far at the WWDC? I think yes and no.
No. It didn’t go too far because everything that Apple said was absolutely true, and part of me was really glad they said it.
Yes. My fear is MS’s capacity to strike back (not through better products but through vicious retaliation). For better or worse (it’s for worse), MS controls most of the software business. I am not so much worried about the bloated ugly mess that is Windows, but rather the bloated ugly mess that is Office. For example, I recently convinced my work to upgrade our CPUs from old Windows machines to new Intel Solo Mac minis. However, the switch was contingent upon the fact that Office is compatible between both platforms. If MS decides to kill Office for Mac, the Mac is screwed. Like it or not (and I don’t), MS Office is the standard out there.
I know there is money for MS to be made in Office for Mac. And I know they just signed a five-year deal with Apple. But have you noticed the trend lately? Every time MS comes around, they’re killing another Mac Program. First, it was IE (OK no loss there), then WMP (it sucked for the Mac but I would have rather they fixed it than dump it on Telestream), and now it’s Virtual PC. I fear that as Apple goes more and more for the jugular against MS, MS can just respond by killing Office for Mac six years from now–and, assuming Office is still the standard, that would be a big blow for the Mac platform, even if Apple has contingency plans for a fully compatible alternative.

Good point. Of course there are alternatives, like Open Office, but Microsoft has most businesses tied right up. Even the schools are dependent on it, so much so that districts that are receiving Microsoft money from settlements with my state (Minnesota) are using much of that money to buy, guess what? More licenses of Office, as well as Windows and other Microsoft crap. How much sense does that make?

Buying a new OS from Apple means your machine works faster and better.
From Windows 95 you probably had to buy a new computer to run just decently XP. When (if) Vista comes out in 2007 you will need a much faster computer in order to even think about moving up from XP.

AS, it doesn’t matter what MS does because Macs now run Windows. So what if they kill ALL of the software for OS X, Macs still run the Windows versions of the same software. Besides, Microsft always kept the Mac versions behind anyway.
I think iWork will turn into a better version of Office when the time is right for Apple to completely cut them off. Pages already reads Word files with minimal complication. As for WMP, Flip for Mac should take care of that so that all WMP files can be played through QuickTime.
I still can’t believe that Apple is charging for QuickTime Pro. It’s hardly anything, and most people I know never buy it. They should just give out the pro version to all Mac and Windows users. That way there will be NO comparison between the two platforms and more people will just use QuickTime for everything.
Apple, at the very least, makes a really good Windows machine. Everything on the Mac side is just a plus . . . a HUGE plus! Get people buying the machines first . . . then convince them to try out the other operating system later. Let them see how awesome it is on their own, and the next thing you know they’ll be hooked.

Every time I say something that people disagree with they assume I’m a “windows drone” or some such bs. I’ve had my experience with other OSs (and have owned a Mac and PC [with Windows and Linux installed]). I agree that OS X updates do a heck of a lot more than XP updates (only one of which, SP2, has touched actual OS functionality), but I am merely stating that Apple gets their money’s worth, and that they should charge less for updates (like OS 10.x –> 10.(x+1) costing, say, $70, and OS X –> OS XI costing the full $130).
Bill Gates is planning to sell $929 million dollars worth of Microsoft stock in the next 12 months.

It really is that simple.
If MS decides to kill office for OS X, Apple can just add a compatibility layer right into the OS so you can run the Winblows version if needed. I am sure Apple already has this working in-house, they just don’t want to release it as it could kill OS X development. But if they have to release it, they can.
Once iWorks is complete (Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc), it will have seamless integration with Office documents anyway.
With every hardware and OS release, Apple gains momentum, while Microsoft just slides closer and closer to just being an OS developer for “gaming toys”. Notice how Vista will have all these “backward incompatible” gaming technologies forcing those gamers (which will probably become their largest market) to upgrade if they want the latest and greatest games? A good example of how Windows is just becoming a “gaming toy OS”.
