“Apple Computer’s latest advertising campaign, pegged to the slogan ‘It just works,’ is irritating some .Mac users as they wonder when the service will become operational again,” Dawn Kawamoto reports for CNET News.
“Over the past four days, .Mac users have struggled to get its Web site publishing features, iWeb, and related file-share capabilities, iDisk, to work. Users have complained not only about the length of the outage, but also what they say is a tardy response from .Mac’s technical support team, according to postings on Apple’s discussion board,” Kawamoto reports.
“Apple, meanwhile, says it is investigating the issue. ‘We are aware of the outage and are looking into it,’ an Apple spokeswoman said. She noted that it is premature to discuss whether Apple plans to reimburse users a portion of their $99.95 annual fee for .Mac service, which also includes data synchronization tools and group e-mail,” Kawamoto reports.

However, Apple’s online listing of .Mac System status for the last 30 days looks almost Microsoftian:

I don’t think .mac should be free, but I do think it’s overpriced for what you get. Don’t get me wrong… I’m a .mac subscriber and a heavy user of most features, but I still think for what you get, it should be between a quarter and a third its current price. They’d get a lot more takers.
Not free, but they could drop the price 30 – 50 bucks.
Or make the basics free and charge a smaller fee for the higher end services.
That’s real bad. I think they pulled a Windows.

Spam Spam Spam. I’m getting tons of spam at my .Mac email account. I never use my .Mac email for any online registrations. But somehow I’m being inundated with spam.
I’ve emailed the .Mac feedback link a few days ago that if this is not solved I probably won’t renew my service.

Ok it really wasn’t me personally, but a NASA run Mac OS X website was hacked recently with the results (and the how to’s) published on Slashdot recently.

i posted two new sites via iWeb last night with no problems.
Right before Apple intros new features to .Mac this always seems to happen. They use our paid service like it’s their own private garden. Apple has never put more than a half hearted effort into .Mac.
P.S.- Remember those promised .Mac only Dashboard Widgets? .Mac users are still waiting for them.
Hmm. My .Mac has been fine.
I do wish they’d drop the price to $69 a year tho.
Btw, I just renewed my subscription for $79 though Amazon. Saving $20 is nothing to sneeze at.

I’ve been using my iDisk – as also did a family member with another account/idisk – extensively over the weekend. No problems here!
I’ve never had a problem with .mac services and I’ve had it just over 3 years. However, I’m not a real heavy user so if it was down for a hour or two every week it’s possible I may never every notice.
.mac should be cheaper.
As the major web companies (Yahoo, Google) add more storage and more features, .mac is becoming relatively more and more expensive. While I love the features, they are not yet worth the price.
Do some shopping online people. Via a simple Froogle search, I was able to get a 1 year .Mac subscription (in retail box) for only $59 with free shipping a couple of months back. Nobody has to pay $99.95 for a .Mac subscription.
I’m having a problem syncing my address book to iDisk.
I looked at the discussion boads, and other people are having the same issues. Acording to one post, Apple has admitted that there is a problem and they’re looking into it.

I’ve had problems uploading a page or two with iWeb. No problems just saving to file and uploading to my iDisk from the finder.
So where does that say the problem comes from?
I keep .Mac mainly for the iCal syncing. Great feature. I can keep multiple macs Synced. Works great.
Backup is nice as well…..
Thanks for the Amazon and Froogle references. Much cheaper.
