“When Mac mini was been announced, I was consulted by the friend who wanted to build the Mac mini into the body shell of Macintosh SE/30. I was happy to work on it,” the “MacMINI in SE/30” web page reads.
The Mac mini was fitted into the SE/30’s case and utilizes the old unit’s built-in 9-inch grayscale screen.
It’s quite strange to see Apple’s Mac OS X Tiger running on a 9-inch grayscale screen!
The builder’s used one of the decorative slits of the Mac SE/30’s case for the Mac mini’s DVD drive’s slot. Slit for slot, so to speak.
See more photos of the construction process and the final result here.

The future is still retro… cool
Totally entertaining — if you’re a stoner.
My favorite Mac mod of all time

I just couldn’t turn mine into an acquarium.
Now I know what to do with it.
Oh, that’s too cool. You could sure spoof some folks, telling them that you have a 20 year old computer running the latest Mac OS. What fun!
A Color Classic would be a good choice if you wanted a color screen. I still have my b/w Classic I bought in 1990.
Slit for slot. Tit for tat.
Twat’s twat, and that’s that.

Macromancer — That thing is sooooooo neat! Damn!!!
Apple should look at what they’ve done there. It’s just so damn well-thought out.
my first mac
If I had any cheddar (that is gangster for money), that would be the first thing I would buy. speaking of money… Is anybody hiring?
The SE/30 didn’t have a grayscale screen, did it? My SE/30 has a monochrome screen.
If they really wanted to be trick they’d figure out how to stuff an LCD screen in there.
Weird, the SE/30 had a monochrome display, and it was only 512×342. The main effort in the hack must’ve been dealing with this.
VERY cool. Imagine being told in 1989 that you’d be able to upgrade your SE/30 for $499 and the upgrade would feature these specs:
Upgrade from 16MHz 68030 to 1.25GHz G4
Upgrade from 1-8MB of RAM to 512MB
40MB Hard Drive to 40GB Hard Drive
SuperDrive (Floppy) to DVD/CD-RW
(also includes Ethernet, and built-in 56k modem)
Fully compatible with OS X
PS: MDN, the posting verification system doesn’t work on FireFox/Explorer for Windows. I have to submit my comments by Mac via VNC 🙁 Please fix, or convince my boss that this is just cause to replace my office machine with a Mac.
“The SE/30 didn’t have a grayscale screen, did it? My SE/30 has a monochrome screen.”
Actually, from what I understand, the screen was greyscale, but the on-board graphics wouldn’t support it in anything other than black-and-white.
Very clever mod.
I saw this a few weeks ago but it’s still really cool. I’ve seen a different one with a color LCD screen. They just took out the original screen and replaced it with a new one, so no it’s not factory.
OLD MACS NEVER DIE!
I wonder how this would work with a color CLASSSIC???

Yes, that is clever.
Perverts
Has anyone seen this done with a iMac G3? That would be cooler. (but less interesting.)
I want to do this with my SE…
SE/30: one of the all-time best Macs!
Nice to see one resurrected!
