Apple Mac mini implanted into Macintosh SE/30; Mac OS X Tiger running on 9-inch grayscale screen

“When Mac mini was been announced, I was consulted by the friend who wanted to build the Mac mini into the body shell of Macintosh SE/30. I was happy to work on it,” the “MacMINI in SE/30” web page reads.

The Mac mini was fitted into the SE/30’s case and utilizes the old unit’s built-in 9-inch grayscale screen.

It’s quite strange to see Apple’s Mac OS X Tiger running on a 9-inch grayscale screen!

The builder’s used one of the decorative slits of the Mac SE/30’s case for the Mac mini’s DVD drive’s slot. Slit for slot, so to speak.

  1. Weird, the SE/30 had a monochrome display, and it was only 512×342. The main effort in the hack must’ve been dealing with this.

VERY cool. Imagine being told in 1989 that you’d be able to upgrade your SE/30 for $499 and the upgrade would feature these specs:
    Upgrade from 16MHz 68030 to 1.25GHz G4
Upgrade from 1-8MB of RAM to 512MB
40MB Hard Drive to 40GB Hard Drive
    SuperDrive (Floppy) to DVD/CD-RW
(also includes Ethernet, and built-in 56k modem)
    Fully compatible with OS X

PS: MDN, the posting verification system doesn’t work on FireFox/Explorer for Windows. I have to submit my comments by Mac via VNC 🙁 Please fix, or convince my boss that this is just cause to replace my office machine with a Mac.

  2. “The SE/30 didn’t have a grayscale screen, did it? My SE/30 has a monochrome screen.”

Actually, from what I understand, the screen was greyscale, but the on-board graphics wouldn’t support it in anything other than black-and-white.

    Very clever mod.

  3. I saw this a few weeks ago but it’s still really cool. I’ve seen a different one with a color LCD screen. They just took out the original screen and replaced it with a new one, so no it’s not factory.
