Here is the new Quad processor from the PowerMac G5. Note the dual cooling pumps and massive heat exchanger. Even the Voltage regulator has a huge heatsink. Keeps my room warm at night. smile

  1. No joke – I’m literally setting up my Quad right now. Received it at the office this morning. 4x1GB ECC RAM and the 7800 video card – WHOA! Previous computer was a Quicksilver…

    Happy New Year Everyone!

  2. Anyone know how much one of these things weigh? No wonder they’re swiching over to Intel. It makes me think that there really isn’t a 2.5 GHz PPC processor, but an over clocked 1.8 or 2.0 that needs all this to function at the higher speed. Apple is right in dumping IBM, imagine what they’ve gone through internally to keep the PowerBook line going.

shesh, got to pat myself on the back nowadays and don’t tell me MDN saw it first because it’s impossible.

Ok MDN is just trying to piss me off I know, so what?

  4. haha, oh brother that post got deleted quick, must have misspelled my email adddy when i submitted the link

LOL this is just too much fun, need I change my IP and delete my cookies again? LOL

  5. “No wonder Apple is switching to Intel”

Well, no, it’s not no wonder. They’re doing it so they can have reasonable battery life and good performance with duals in the powerbooks, not because the Quad G5 throws off too much heat. By this time next year Apple might have Quad Intels, who knows. But I betcha it’ll be quite a bit more than a year before a Quad Intel can blow the doors off a Quad G5. Personally I don’t really care how much heat the Quad generates as long as it won’t trip my breakers and it’s quiet, which it is, even when loaded to the gills.

  6. Man, that thing is crazy. My guess is that you can’t pick one of those cooling units up at the computer wholesale shop downtown. How often do you have to change the oil on that thing? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  7. As scottm4321 says no wonder Apple are switching to Intel, though the weight is one factor.

Yes a PowerMac with Intel’s “Yonah” inside, Intels answer to dual-core processing, will certainly beat the IBM G5 dual-core in the Quad – but as will newer chips as time passes by.

Not so long ago my current G4 450 dual-single core was thought as being top of the range and powerful. Yes Moore’s law is supposed to have been beaten and no longer relevent.

Even today’s dual-cores will become “old-hat” and outdated/outmoded, especially once a new much more capable material or substance can be found to replace silicon as it is this aspect – silicon – that currently holds back further development in CPU manufacture and design.

Just so that you know I own 4 Macs, with the last purchase being a PowerBook 1Ghz, Combo, an eMac with an upgraded Superdrive – Pioneer’s 110D and my first Mac, which I still use, a G3 B/W Yosemite. Yes I will have 5 Macs once I have got the Quad.

  8. Looks like the hoses in my car. What happens is a G5 hose leaks?

Apple repair person – “I’ve checked under the hood and replaced the coolant, but it looks like you need new hoses and a new head gasket. Try to keep it under 2 GHz in the future.”

  9. Just how do you change your IP address?

Change your IP all you want, ISP’s have logs what account had what number at what time and day.

Entire ranges can be blocked as well so your whole ISP can be blocked if need be.

  10. aahhh the last of the PPC G5 badboys, I’m getting one because intel chips are slow, DRM laden POS.

You’ll see when iTunes purchases get locked to the hardware along with all your software, OS etc.

No more SnapZ Pro X, no more Audio Hijack no more DVD rips…

It’s all over and Apple is going to sugar coat it.

I know exactly what’s going to happen, I’ve seen it before. Mac’s will not be viewed the same anymore, they will be just PC’s.

The charm will wear off and the Apple Stores will go dormant, because we know a Mac is no longer a mac, it’s a PC
