RUMOR: No Intel-based Apple Mac debut at Macworld Expo in January 2006

“Apple says not to expect Intel at Macworld, in fact don’t expect any new computer hardware. I have contact with someone that works for Apple at a higher level, when asked if they were attending Macworld he said he [was] told that they shouldn’t go,” Derek Picone reports for TechWB. “Typically if there is a big announcement they are expected to attend.”

Picone reports, “This means that for anyone hoping for the new Intel computers your [sic] out of luck, no hardware will be announced except for maybe the normal speed boosts since those wouldn’t be any reason for them to attend. The only announcements will be coming from the other non computer hardware departments such as new iPods, iSight, Monitors, Programs, and other software and accessories.”

  1. My 2¢

I think that MWSF will be more about software announcements than hardware.

If you think Steve Jobs will go on stage without some hardware for the famous ‘One more Thing’ routine, you are crazy.

  3. Somewhere at Apple HQ a few days ago.

Steve J: Ok everybody, next item. You all know how I love to get the Apple and Tech press worlds all in a titter for those speeches of mine…so per the norm, we want to throw up as much of a smoke screen as possible for the MacWorld keynote address. Hmmmm..what do you say we do the whole “say the opposite of what’s going to happen thing.”

Phil S: Yes! Yes! Oh that sounds like a great idea. Your best idea yet. Steve you’re great!

Jon: Aww we did that last time Steve come on! Think different!

Steve J: Hey! (pointing finger) You can’t say “think different” in these meetings…ever! You have to put a dollar in the bowl on the way out the door.

Jon R: Ohhh jeez, OK OK another dollar for your bowl. Sorry.

Phil S: Wow! Steve that was a great idea to make Jon put a dollar in your bowl for saying that thing that we don’t say in these meetings.

Jon R: Anyone know how many more days til March 31st?

Phil S; Oh Jon you big joker! HA HA HA HA HA HA!

    (uncomfortable silence)

Steve J: (looking annoyed at Phil) So we all agree to my cunning plan, then…Right?!?!?

    (silence)

Steve J: Goooood (wringing hands) OK everybody go tell your “secret contacts” that you have been instructed that attendance of top Apple brass at my awesome keynote is not expected. With all the talk of new intel machines for the 10th. That should really confuse the hell out of them, since everyone knows that if there is a big announcement…all Apple department heads have to be there for it. Oh and you all better be there for my Keynote or my dollar bowl is going to be filling up.

Phil S: Oh yes! Yes! What a great and different idea Steve!

Steve J: Oh shut up Phil…

  4. Derek Picone reports for TechWB.

From what I can tell, this is a student with a blog, and he wanted some hits. He certainly got them. This rumor is friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend nonsense.

I can’t believe that MDN posted this, let alone gave it any credibility whatsoever. You have just lost your right to say anything about Enderle, in perpetuity.

MW: “weeks” as in “Too many weeks of this crud left before MWSF.

  5. No firewire on new ipods is ridiculous. Love my mac, love my first generation ipod, but USB? I understand being able to sell to the PC using customer, but why take 3 steps backwards and make us Mac users suffer. What’s next…the return of the Apple IIgs?

  6. Come on guys, let’s be honest. Why the rush? As someone already noted, Rosetta isn’t ready. How many other programs are already Intel-compatible? Is even Microsoft Office ready? Anything other than the Apple suites?

They come out with an Intel PB or Intel Desktop, and it’ll run as slow as the G3s until the programs are ready a few months later. Not worth it.

    Let’s hope for real announcements.

  7. “Be pretty lame if all we get is some software updates, especially with all the hype.”

Odd statement since it is the press and the rumormongers that are creating the hype- not Apple. It’s all pure speculation. Your best bet is to go into these things with very few and conservative expectations, that way you will most likely be pleasently surprised! There are a few things I would like to see come out of it, but I’m not holding my breath. iLife ’06 comes to mind, as well as Pages v2 and a spreadsheet program.

  8. “Please. Name the last MWSF that didn’t have a major computer hardware announcement?”

Doesn’t matter. If Intel Macs are not ready, then they are NOT READY! it doesn’t matter what Apple wants, or what they have done before, if it just can’t be done.

Maybe they can be ready. Maybe not. Maybe it will happen a month later. We’ll know soon enough.

  9. I think everyone needs to take all these rumors with a grain of salt whether or not they do or don’t announce intel Macs. I also think that no one at Apple will say anything about Mac World because even most people in the company don’t know what announcements will be made. I know personally a Service and product engineer and he doesn’t even get this kind of info. So take it or leave it but don’t bother getting all riled up. It’s best to just wait and find out when they announce. If they announce intel Macs great, if not oh well but you know it won’t be to far off anyways.

  10. Maybe the Mac mini DVR is going to be the announcement after all. Think about it. It could have a Yonah, but Rosetta wouldn’t really be necessary because it’s meant as a living room appliance and ships with all the Apple-made, UB software it will ever need already installed.

I’m going to be really surprised if there are new iBooks, PowerBooks, etc. announced. It’s not that I don’t think Apple could pull it off, but they have to rely on their developers to make this change too. If they start shipping and everything has to run through Rosetta, I think that would be a big mistake.

  11. Well, if Yonah (dopey name) processors are being officially announced around the beginning of January, then it makes no sense that Apple would NOT be announcing and releasing new machines based on them in the same time frame.

I would assume that Apple will need substantial time to get this MASSIVE hardware/software shift going and to get everything working properly. The last thing that Apple could handle is some kind of bug storm after finally releasing Intel based Macs, whether they be minis, iBooks or PowerBooks.

Also, let’s hope that Apple WILL NOT be putting those VILE “Intel Inside” stickers on OUR Macs!

  12. If no new Macs are announced at Macworld, is this an effort by Apple to make these big events redundant and announce their products during “special events” as they did more this year?

Boston/New York’s has gone,… is San Francisco’s on death row too?

  13. I’ve been saying it since last June: SJ will announce at least one Intel based Macintosh at MWSF and ship before the end of the month.

Remember those rumors about Apple pressuring Intel for early delivery of the Yonah? Now Intel is set to announce it the week before MW. Put two and two together folks. The handwriting is on the wall and it all points to portables/mini at MWSF.

As regards software not being ready: There actually are quite a few apps which are already universal binaries. For those that aren’t, it’s not wise to wait till they are (i.e. Apple might never ship an Intel Mac). Look how long it took Adobe to make a MacOS X build!

  14. ndelc writes: “I’m going to be really surprised if there are new iBooks, PowerBooks, etc. announced. Well that was their strategy for MacOS X, and it worked. I don’t see why this is any different. Developers sometimes need some prodding. Waiting for developers to get on-board before shipping Intel Macintoshes ain’t gonna happen folks. Apple would essentially be held hostage by them. It would be foolish for Apple to wait for that reason alone.

I predict that M$ will not ship universal binaries for quite some time. They want to do everything possible to impede Apple’s transition to Intel. Think about it. It’s their MO (and it may backfire on them too.) It wouldn’t surprise me if Apple is anticipating this, and will roll out a spreadsheet app with the Intel Macs.

Rosetta is in your future, just as the Classic environment was for the MacOS X transition. Get used to the idea.

  15. Of course there will be hardware announcements and software upgrades but just no Intel books yet.
Sure maybe Stevie will say we are on schedule for June releases of intel hardware but it’s simply too soon.
Jesus this takes a lot of work people.

  16. MacDailyNews Take: Rumor. Take at least two grains of salt with this one and call us on January 10th.

As we should with the rumors in favor of Intel-based Macs being introduced in January.

  17. Jamie says: “From what I can tell, this is a student with a blog, and … This rumor is friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend nonsense… I can’t believe that MDN posted this, let alone gave it any credibility whatsoever. You have just lost your right to say anything about Enderle, in perpetuity.”

MDN does have a tendancy to publicize anything written with the words “Mac” “Apple” and “Jobs”, but hey – it’s not indiscriminate about it. I mean, if an author does say disparaging things, they also have to be an idiot and thus easily refuted – like Enderle. Nail those criteria and your gold here, so this kid played his cards perfectly.

Here’s something a little tougher to diss:
    http://www.anandtech.com/IT/showdoc.aspx?i=2644

Intel’s new dual core Xeon server CPU (Bensley) was tested by Anandtec against the latest Opteron 280. Performance per Watt is Intel’s main advantage – according to some CEOs – and so it was a big part of the testing criteria here. According to Anand, the brand new Bensley, still running almost a Gig faster then the AMD part, has finally equalled or exceeded the performance numbers of the Opteron (which we all know has been killing Intel for a while now). However, Bensley’s power consumption numbers are still abysmal:

“At 40-60% load, it costs $42 a month to run a Bensley system while an Opteron system would cost $25… over a year, … Bensley … would cost $504 to run and an Opteron … $300. Now, if that doesn’t pique your interest, let’s say that you have 40 servers at a datacenter, with the same power characteristics. Over a year, it would cost you $8,160 more to run the Bensley system… If all you care about is performance, then Bensley is [a good] … platform…, if you want the best performance per Watt, then Opteron is [better]… At least that is what the … results … here dictate. Obviously, given Intel’s roadmap, they are developing platforms [Woodcrest] to address performance per Watt.”

Lets hope so. But it seems like everything with Intel is a massive tradeoff. Yonah (which Woodcrest will be based on) had test numbers showing an energy advantage that is just as marginal as Bensley’s performance advantage, but Yonah’s overall performance is well behind the best AMD has to offer. The following test results are NOT against AMDs best, and Yonah is still middling:

Now, granted, this topic isn’t quick OR sexy, and there isn’t a single mention of Apple. But this IS the company whose technology that Apple’s entire computer lineup will be wedded to soon. Why isn’t MDN covering ANY kind of stuff like this, instead of some goofy college kid pretending he knows high ranking Apple execs?

    I’m just askin!
