UK woman narrowly survives Xbox fire; users report Xbox 360 ‘crashing like mad’

“So, the Xbox 360’s been available for, what, 15 minutes, and already the crash reports are streaming in. According to postings on Xbox-Scene and other fan sites, some early adopters are discovering that waiting on line in the cold for two years to snag a box was the least of their problems: the game consoles are allegedly crashing during a variety of games and reporting a range of error messages,” Marc Perton reports for Engadget.

“A quick look on our forums (more, more and more) seems to indicate he’s not the only one. Several of our members seems to get crashing 360s. It doesn’t seem to be related to a specific game, as we get reports of the Xbox 360 crashing with several games. And it’s not all the same Error-number either (E79, E74, E64, real crashes, …). I quickly checked over at TeamXbox and they also have a large thread and poll about defective Xbox 360s,” XanTium reports for Xbox-Scene.com.

In somewhat related news, The Register reports that a UK woman was “was pulled unconscious from her house by two strangers after succumbing to smoke generated by a faulty Xbox… Anglesey fire and rescue spokesman Dave Evans confirmed the fire was caused by a ‘fault in an Xbox game machine’ left on standby. Back in February, Microsoft recalled 14.1m Xbox power cables shipped into Europe before 13 January, 2004 and in other territories before 23 October, 2003, as we previously reported. MS admitted to ’30 or so reports from users suffering minor burns, singed upholstery or scorched carpets as a result of power lead malfunctions.'”

  1. And how much did all these losers pay for their xBox?

    $399 + Tax + Shipping + y($50) = xBox

The variable “y” in this equation equals “number of games purchased”.

The variable “x” in this equation equals “Crash”.

All hail the almighty CrashBox from Micro$oft. These losers could have built a PC that does everything and more and purchased the PC versions of these games and saved a Micro$hit load of money in the process.

    LMAO

  2. “if MS is that bad why Apple still can not beat it?”::First, it’s ‘cannot’. Second, you are focusing your “reality” in the wrong direction, most people will be like nature. They act like Entropy, they take the easiest route. But with Microsuck, this route is not the eastiest. They think that they are getting a bargin, but in truth they are spending little money on little value.

    They get:
    — a cheap computer with cheap components
    — an ancient OS that is only cobbled, aka patched, together to make work with every update–of which NEEDS to be patched daily once relased
    — takes an enormous amount of learning to understand
    — is flaky when it does work
    — gives a false sense of comfort in the fact that there are “others” out there, aka Stockholm Syndrome
    — headaches, stress, illness from stress
    — bewilderment at the fact that this is actually a comptuer
    — brainwashing into believing that there is no alternative (dead wrong on that point, hence this and MANY other sites devoted to Mac info.)
    — considerable time investment on learning, optimizing, and defending there “computer”
    — daily updating of virus, spyware, malware protection
    — lost $$$ on the cost of protection software
    — lost time fixing the “computer” when it could be used towards productivity

Shall I go on? These are my observations of what people have gone through, not readings from the countless sites that can back up each statement here.

MDN MW: “expensive”:: It truly is expensive to operate Winblows.

  3. macnut222 — you’re getting more articles posted here than i have been recently. You better watch it man, or i’m going to send WOW MDN over to live under your house.

On a related note, has site traffic increased here? We seem to have sprouted a new, much more generic, brand of troll in the last few months?

  4. WOW MDN,

From your use of derogatory language – “fags” – I would guess you are a right wing, narrow minded, homophobic, bigot who couldn’t even point to to Britain on the map, let alone spell it without the help of a spell checker.

My second guess is that you are American.

Which reminds me of a favourite sport Australians like to play – Where’s that country? Show Yanks a map of the world and ask them where a country is. Then die laughing as they point to Russia when asked to point to the U.S.A., or Australia as Iraq.

  5. Yet another great solution from Microsoft – the Xbox 360!

Will folks ever learn – M$$$$$ IS ALL ABOUT MONEY NOT CUSTOMER SUPPORT AND GOOD WILL!

HOLD OFF YOU GUYS – JOB’S WIL COME AROUND SOONER OR LATER AND OFFER A iGAME SOLUTION AND THE WOULD WILL COME A RUNNING

  6. This is what happens when you’re dumb enough to want to be ‘cool’ and be one of the first to own a new product. Better to wait a while, even one week will do, to see if there are going to be problems with a product.
And I’ll throw Apple into this hole as well. If people had waited a while after the nanos release and then realised that it easily prone to scratches, then they may have thought twice about purchasing. Best to wait until bugs are ironed out before leaping in. But on another note, you’d think MS would have tested this new machine before releasing it. And I don’t mean play the first few levels of each game and say yeah it works.

We Yanks don’t need all that geography stuff–We’re MS gamers.

Right wing is the way to go.

Hey we can dislike gays and shut up about it and you can BE gay and shut up about it. How’s that?

No.. gays don’t like that deal..

  9. Some ‘net sites are reporting polling almost as high as 15% failure rates. Even accounting for anti-Microsoft trolls at those sites the real failure rates could be as high as 10%.

Apple had a problem with the iPod nano screens with about 0.1% of them being truly bad (in the first groups shipped).

Because of this there were loud screams of “recall” and “class action lawsuit”. There actually is a lawsuit filed for class action status (don’t know if the status was granted or not). This is about a < 1% issue.

Why are we not hearing the same outrage and demands for recalls and class action lawsuits over what could very well be a > 10% issue?

(Probably for the same reason Apple was sued over repetitive stress injuries [even though Apple was the only company to ship a split keyboard which was individually adjustable] while Microsoft was not.)

  10. Agree Shadowself. I believe the nature of the organisations and their respective ‘followers’ are to do with that. Microsoft goes for the jugular and thereby encourages others to do so too. Apple gets on with the innovation.

I also agree with the posts about trolling levels on MDN – definitely up on my view of past experience. I suggest its the kneejerk ‘attack is the best form of defence’ mechanism.

  11. To MasterMacNikon,

In brief I see your point about why MS is still dominating the market as follows – public is stupid to tell that Apple is better.

I generally agree as I have switched and can compare both but if the customer is stupid it shall be much more easy for Apple to make them switch. Nevertheless Apple still fails to do it. Sad but true.

PS about my spelling as it that issue has been raised more then once here – if u wanna have my ideas in a less imperfect written form u may switch to my native language which is Russian. Let me know when u learn it well enough to be able to keep up a primitive conversation:)

  12. It’s obvious to me that you Mac idiots can’t see innovation when you see it. What you thought were crashes in IN FACT a new Microsoft innovation that we call LardBGone v1.0. In order to help stop the obesity epidemic in America, the console will stop playing after some time so that you will go work out. HOW’S THAT for innovation! Hey, my pal Steve Ballmers lost 10 pounds already!

Oh, and what you thought was a fire is in fact another Microsoft innovation called RealEffects v1.1. Instead of just a computer generated image of a fire on the screen, RealEffects produces a REAL fire to enhance game play. That woman in the UK probably put her Xbox next to a flammable source, which we CLEARLY explained in page 1,693 of the Xbox Quick Start Manual in BOLD 2 point font.

Hey I beat Apple to the punch this time! HA HA HA!

  13. [Are these crashes more common than with other brands? You really can’t tell.]

    I can tell.

I’ve owned every Nintendo system, less the Virtual GB. NONE of them EVER crashed. I have PSone and PS2, no crashes. Sega GameGear, no crashes.

    Your naivete seems more affectation.
