Apple removes new Eminem iPod ad from website

“Apple has apparently pulled its new iPod commercial featuring rap star Eminem [from its website]. No reason was given for the withdrawl. The 30-second spot premiered today during Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ keynote speech at an Apple special event. The ad features Eminem performing his hit single ‘Lose Yourself’ and was expected to begin airing on television in a week,” iPodNN reports.

Apple doesn’t choose musicians to honor. The only goal is to make money.

..but since music is so dear to me:

- Staple Singers
- Motown (yep… the bandmembers too… especially having done some gigs with Martha Reeves myself)
- Branford Marsalis (check out his A Love Supreme Live concert)
- Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny Rollins, and much more…..too many to mention.

Could it possibly be because the guy is an asshole? He sued Apple last year because of their use of one of his ‘songs’ in an Apple advert. He got all bunged-up about it and decided to go litigious on Apple. The use of Eminem and his music in an advert spot must have been part of the settlement.

Emin-enema is an talentless jerk who glommed-on to Rap/Hip-Hop, at just the right time, to become one of the first white ‘rappers’. He got lucky. Who gives a shit?

Let Slim-Shady go back to his trailer park.

Jobs does a good job at putting the “cool” factor into Apple’s products but he does a lousy job with advertising, or lack there of. Apple will never realize their potential until they hire a real advertising company and ban Jobs from those meetings.

Their commercials say nothing to those that are not familiar with Apple’s products. For such a smart person Jobs is an idiot when it comes to advertising.

Don’t care for the eminem part, but i liked the graphix (never mind the ugly tone of the ‘story’- did somebody at the adagency take in too much ‘Dark Knight’?). Would be nice to have a copy when they inevitably take down the ‘special event’-site, which might as well be next week, what with the speed at which apple is going at the moment … -> Re ‘switch’ – no, i mean the win->apple campaign. The ad was very “cool,” yes… and as a graphic designer who’s worked in tv I appreciate the difficulty and technical acheivement of it. I don’t think a discussion of Eminem’s talent is necessary—though personally I see him as an immense talent—but he does represent an odd “spokesmusician” for apple. I think the U2 commercial does much more for the iPod and the brand.

The original silhouette ads were marvels of advertising. They communicated the brand and product well, and were an infinitely adaptable core idea that could be used for print, outdoor, tv, etc. in equal effectiveness. The “eminem” ad muddies that up and represents a step backward, not a step forward, in apple’s advertising progression.

Finally, I agree with “Bob” that a much better ad would have been something playing off the B/W versions utilizing a b/w ad…juxtaposed on the color screen. I personally would have liked to see a tv ad that began with the old solid color silhouettes and pulled back into b/w environement (like the U2 ad) to have an “old silhouette ad” playing on the new iPod…calling attention to the color screen and video features without straight abandoning the old, near-perfect ads.
