    BBC commences TV download trial
Wednesday, September 28 2005, 13:44 BST — by Neil Wilkes

The BBC is to begin rollout of its iMP (integrated Media Player) service to trial volunteers.

Around 30,000 registered to be part of the trial, which allows users to download selected BBC TV and radio programmes up to seven days after their initial broadcast.

A selected shortlist of 5,000 will be contacted over the next fortnight with details of how to access the iMP program. The pilot will use DRM software to render the files unusable after the one week window and will also prevent users from sharing the files with others.

“This response has been fantastic,” said Tony Ageh, controller of internet at the BBC. “There was a sense from the first technical trial that a catch up TV and radio service would be extremely popular with people. This has been confirmed in these numbers; the public have been quick to realise the possibilities that iMP will bring them. It has the potential to truly revolutionise the way that people watch and listen to programmes.”

The findings from the pilot, which runs through December, will aid the BBC Governors in making a decision on whether to approve the iMP for a full rollout.

  2. If the BBC is so independant why does it attract so many left wing loonies? The Noth American audiences for BBC News made up of well to do liberal urbanites.

They wouldn’t listen to balanced, unaltered news.

  3. isn’t it the BBC who refer to the terrorist murderers both arond the world and on the British subways as “insurgents” so as not to hurt anybody’s diverse feelings?

The feminization of Western culture has left us in the situation we are in today. We have culture units within the Pentagon that dictate how we can fight a war so as not to hurt our enemy’s feelings. We have colleges brainwashing our youth into liberalism. We have media like cnn running a story on the “risks” to the black culture in New Orleans. Risks? You mean if enterprising whites and Asians move into the newly rebuilt city, rather than the same welfare-sucking criminal dependant black class, there is a risk? I would call that progress. I don’t see any stories in the liberal news media about the “risks” to American culture and society from the mass illegal influx of aliens from Mexico. I don’t see anything in the BBC about the endless stream of Africans and Middle Easterners who are making their way into England and living off the welfare system there.

Bunch of crap. The BBC promotes this sort of agenda and it is the downfall of western civilization. The BBC used to be great, but that was in a prior non-feminized, non-liberalized generation. This is the case with most things today.

  6. haha:

    No, and you’re an idiot.

The people who bombed London Underground on July 7 have been referred to variously as “tube bombers”, “terrorists” and other unambiguous terms, as were the 9/11 terrorists.

The word “insurgent” is factually correct – in the same way it was 220 years ago when colonial American forces started rebelled – quite rightly – against the rule of George III.

Compare this to American media in the Eighties who referred to the Contradoras in Nicaragua as freedom-fighters; as you would with people who literally skinned those who disagreed with them.

But of course, I’m forgetting that I’m talking to a country that only discovered the depths of evil to which terrorism can sink four years ago as opposed to their behaviour before that time which was to fund Irish “freedom fighters” (which we in the UK always consistently maintained were terrorists, whilst Presidents of various colours – including Ronald Reagan – entertained them in the White House).

And if you haven’t seen anything on the BBC regarding illegal immigration, I would suggest that’s because you don’t have all four channels or receive all of the 500+ hours of programming that it shows each week: the BBC’s News & Factual Affairs section has often produced articles and programming on this subject, as does our ITV (mainstream commercial television) and C4 (niche commercial).

In fact, the only channel that doesn’t make a contribution to that debate other than the interviewing of politicians is Sky, the British cousin of Fox. So I think the words that I’m looking for are “Bite me”.

  7. haha: Was the BBC around when the British were pushing drugs in China? Maybe that’s how they brought those crown jewels – the original masters of bling. “Oh yeah, baby! Pimp out my warships! So I can go pimp all the earth’s colored people. Cause we are civilized whites! When we put fear in people its not terrorism it spreading democorcy – but if a desert negro does it, lets label it TERRORISM.”

My MW = class. Like what haha does not have.

  8. iDont:

That’s funny, judging by the figures of your own CIA, you seem to have enough peasants already…

3% of the country (aged 15 and over) are unable to either read and/or write and an infant mortality rate of 6.5 deaths/1000 (Worse then Cuba and only rated 42 in the world). Wealth distribution (where 0 is the perfect score) is rated at 45 (close to Uzbekistan – you must be so proud).

Compared to 1% illiteracy in the UK and a mortality rate of 5.16/1000. Wealth distribution is rated at 36.8. Or let’s compare the USA to France: 1% illiteracy and 4.26/1000. Wealth distribution is 32.7.

How about Australia: No measurable illiteracy, 4.69 infant deaths/1000 and a wealth distribution of 35.2.

Still, at least you’re always able to get doughnuts no matter how far from civilization you may be…which must be nice.

  12. MCCFR: You are sooo cute when you spout off your useless stats. Every county (just like people) are good at at least one thing. Hell, Haiti is number one in voodoo, Columbia has great cocaine, Japan has the world best sushi, etc, etc, etc. Over all USA is number 1 in the world. Why? Cause we say so, we are the world only super power. The sun does not set on our empire!!! We are the borg!!!

What you got against doughnuts? Maybe because you are a gutless piece of low life crap that can not appreciate or digest the finer things in life. Or not. Stop hating us and worship us. You’ll be a lot happier. Now go have a crappy day.

  13. Just for the record, iDont does not represent the entire country — only the “Rah Rah, Siss-Boom-Bah” “our country can beat up your country” “we have a right to Wal•Mart’s everyday low prices” “these colors don’t run” “made in China” “would you like fries with that” “screw the job market, let’s just outsource it to India for maximum profits” crowd.

  14. in an hour i will go out and have dinner with some friends 2 from the states and one from canada , we will have a laugh about this and whats more they wont even need to be apologists from some of the mindelss guff above because its obvious too many sad gits with no friends get their kicks on sites like this by being irritating just to get some attention.

oh i am writing this on a powerbook that, like my ipod was designed, more or less, by one of those peasant brits over there.

iDont? well dont worry i wouldn’t want to even if you paid me!!

right off now for a slap up dinner CHEERIO!!!

  17. Mr Geography Teacher:

I stand corrected. I should have said city. The capital and largest city of South Carolina, in the central part of the state. It was chosen as the site of the new state’s capital in 1786. Population: 98,052 that has great cocaine.

Also Mr. Teacher why is it that the worst students in college go into the education field. The Ed Dept is the ghetto of higher learning. Most teachers suck. That’s why I don’t know how to spell Columbia.

  18. iDon’t >

Would you like some dips to go with those chips on your shoulder?

Only somebody with an unbelievable level of insecurity would make a statement which can be boiled down to “we’re the world’s number one because we say so, and if you don’t agree, we’ll hold you to ransom militarily or commercially”.

As for the stats, you bought up the subject of “peasants”: I merely went and found the statistics which illustrated that the USA already has its fair share, given that it has a higher infant mortality rate that many countries that are supposedly less developed or have lower tax bases – a key indicator that all is not well at the poorer end of society; also, a higher illiteracy rate (having nearly 10 million people who can’t read and/or write is hardly something to be proud of).

You could have argued that the USA has a higher GDP/capita than any of those countries (indeed, the USA’s GDP/capita is second in the world only to Luxembourg), however that advantage is wiped out by higher health costs and extremely poor wealth distribution where the gap between the very rich and the very poor appears to be getting worse.

But, interestingly, you chose to respond to my useless stats (sourced from your highly-funded CIA) with some nonsense about sushi and voodoo: not exactly a well-founded intellectual argument, however I think we can work out your capacity for reason from with the line “Most teachers suck. That’s why I don’t know how to spell Columbia”. I don’t think that’s because your teachers sucked. I think it’s because you weren’t paying attention.

BTW, I personally have nothing against doughnuts – if you believe that deep-frying dough is the height of gastronomic achievement, I’m very happy for you, I’m just not certain they should be counted as a food group – this also applies to waffles and pancakes.

  19. Hi MCCFR,

It’s so nice to hear from you. I hope you enjoyed dinner.

OK, so America is falling. I see it. It’s cultural gangrene by our own national choice. The Soviet Union collapsed from sheer bumbling foolishness and we are hard at work on it.

Ever ten minutes a new study appears saying that American kids can barely read. In America! How is this possible? How hard is it to teach kids to read? Not very. It’s hard to keep most of them from doing it.

Dear MCCFR, I’m just a cynic and sometimes poor comic. I did not mean to offend you. Sorry if I did. I’ve lived in Europe (England), North Africa (Tunisia), Middle East (SA), and Asia (Korea). Ol’ Karl Marx used to talk about these irresistible currents of history that just swept you along. Yes, we (USA) are in that current.

    Take care.
