J.P. Morgan raises Apple estimates based on ‘more optimistic’ Mac shipments

J.P. Morgan Securities raised its third-quarter earnings view on Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) based on a “more optimistic” Mac shipments forecast and Tiger operating system sales.

“Analyst Bill Shope now sees third-quarter earnings at 32 cents a share from 30 cents expected earlier, and revenue at $3.34 billion, up from his previous view of $3.29 billion,” Reuters reports. “The analyst also raised the June quarter Mac shipment forecast to 1.14 million units from 1.12 million previously, and his software sales estimate to $310 million from $280 million earlier.”

Shope maintained his iPod sales forecast at 5.55 million units for the quarter and retained his “overweight” rating on Apple shares.

  1. If apples sales climb after the anouncement and before the release of the intel mac’s then expect huge growth in near future.

The truth is that the anouncement is a sales disaster. Many – perhaps most people who are considering mac will wait for the new models, so if sales are still growing then mac demand is huge.

  2. Bike: I prefer rubenesque, thank you.

Bobby: I kinda’ agree. Sales will be huge in the future, I believe, too. I just don’t think the switch is a sales disaster.

I do know of several people who are simply waiting for their next paycheck to clear before they buy their first Mac. It’s all of us, the hyper-interested crowd that even thinks about such matters. Everyone who I’ve switched, even though I give them the whole spiel about technical points (as best I can) is really sold on the OS and the computer’s overall styling. “Does it do what I need it to do?” is usually the most in-depth question. Once they see it can and there are no viruses etc, they’re sold.

Now, when the Intel versions come out, I know I’m buyin’ and tons of others, too.

  3. I’m waiting for the next mini revision.
Coming soon! .. And it won’t be Intel, and that doesn’t bother me in the least.

Then in two to three years I’ll buy the Intel version.
    No problem.

I don’t think now (as I did at first) that Macs will be standing and collecting dust on the shelves in the months before the first Intel-Macs are introduced.

I don’t believe that for a second, in fact I plan on buying a PowerMac G5 within the next six months, and that plan hasn’t changed because of any announcement! Any new deployment will take time to work out the bugs so get the winner now, then in five years when you want something faster get a Mactel. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

I disagree… I have had my mini for about 3-4 months now, and am super pleased with it… I came from a Athlon XP 3200+ Windows system, and while the mini is a little slower in a couple ways, overall, my productivity (with the same software) has noticably increased… And I haven’t had a Mac since about ’93.

In fact, I am so happy with OSX (and especially Tiger), that I decided to set aside half my paychecks for three months to buy a new Dual 2.7 G5 PowerMac… The intel switch thing is not affecting my decision in the slightest… At most, I might hold off if the rumour mill starts talking about Dual Dual-core G5 systems coming out soon (and I expect the price would require me to save a couple more months anyhow).

  6. Actually, as far as NOT buying now because of the Intel deal – on the contrary. NOW is the time to buy because by the time the intel switch is COMPLETE, you’ll be ready for a new computer anyway. At least I’ll want a new one just….because I want the fastest, most up-to-date, best I can buy, without being too cutting edge.

I was going to wait until the Intel Macs came out, but instead I went ahead and purchased a third Mac (one for my kids) and will now ride on these (we bought our first in Nov`04, second in March `05, 3rd in June `05) three Macs for the next 3 years. That will give developers and Apple time to work through the conversion process — applications will get converted to take advantage of the Intel hardware, etc…

Having been a long time Windows user (from 1990-2004) I can honestly tell you I have every confidence in the conversion and the current PowerPC systems. It’s amazing what Apple has done with this OS and they are not going to be stupid about the conversion to a new CPU.

Get a Mac now if you need to replace an aging one. I would not wait.
