RUMOR: Sony and Apple working together on PlayStation 3

The moderator of PS3 Forums, “The Unofficial PS3 H.Q.” has posted the following:

Apple + Sony = PS3

I am now hearing stronger rumors that Sony is indeed working with Apple on the PS3. Most of this work is based around support for iTunes and iPop on the PS3.

iPod connectivity – Ability to connect the iPod to the PS3 and play it’s music through the PS3 to your stereo or other audio playback devices. Will also provide some graphical effects on your TV during playback

iTunes linkup – Access iTunes and your music through the PS3. Purchase and download additiona tracks through the PS3. Wirelessly play iTunes music from your PC/Mac through the PS3

Sync support – Use the PS3 to sync your iPod with iTunes, no need for a PC or Mac to sync and add/remove tracks and organize playlists.

Apple may also be helping Sony with some UI design for the PS3 dashboard interface. No links, and for that I appologize, but I figured people would like to hear this information anyways. If the rumors hold true, this would be mutually benefitical for Sony and Apple in a lot of ways.

And, over at Engadget, Joshua Fruhlinger is reporting that, “Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich thinks Apple and Sony could be working on some big things.” Full article here.

Steve Jobs at MacWorld Expo 2005, Tuesday, January 11, 2005, “You know, we do work very closely with Sony on digital still cameras and these new camcorders, which is really great. And who knows, maybe someday, computers and music, too.” QuickTime video of Steve Jobs’ comment at 57:38.

MacDailyNews Take: This is a rumor. Take it with a grain of salt. It would be very interesting, though, wouldn’t it?

  1. Well, from what I saw of the ‘Xbox unveiling’ last night, they don’t have to work too hard (not that they shouldn’t) to maintain their current lead over M$ and even put more distance between them…

I certainly hope that the PS3 has more network usage this go-around also.

It would be nice to be able to use your iPod as a memory card to store your games or preferences to use on different consoles!!

  2. Would this mean that Sony is giving up on their own MP3 offerings?

After all, if you’re going too support a portable unit, wouldn’t you support your own if you were planning on continuing to carry it?

  3. I saw the MTV broadcast last night ahd felt underwhelmed. Not because the console didn’t seem impressive, but rather the fact that there was too much sizzle and not enough steak.

    That said, I can’t wait for E3 (conference starting May 17; expo – 18).

  4. This is BS.

Sony was given the opportunity to partner with Apple on iTMS. They turned Jobs down.

They want their own formats for audio to work. They want to sell their MP3/ATRAC3 players, not iPods.

Don’t people remember this is Sony, a competitor to Apple and in general a company torn apart from within.

  5. MDN Magic word “street”. As in word on the street save Sony would be smart to make the next Walkman iPod compatible. Word on the street says the Connect music store should be Fairplay compatible. Word on the street says that if both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 used PowerPC processors that the Mac would be the most kick-ass gaming system around.

  6. Shit I want Apple to release a Gamer’s version of the Mac mini that plays playstation games…

The iPod stuff is cool, it would screw up the Sony Connect stuff .. and it would make the XBOX look stupid…

  7. They lose money on console sales anyways, why not make every mac an alternative PS?

That said, they sepc for the 360 are impressive for a console, and the screenshots were nice

  8. Gotta remember who was on stage with Jobs at Macworld ’05. Sony is a VERY LARGE corporation; almost like a bunch of mini-companies under one name. The Playstation division may have decided that getting Apple to help them will attract more buyers than if they used the Connect store.

  9. They lose money on console sales anyways

Well, except for Nintendo, who makes a profit on the console AND the dozens of AAA titles they develop.

MS is pushing the Xbox Live subscriptions to hopefully, get in the black.. they lost about 1.3 B annually with the last Xbox

  10. Heh. They forgot to mention that iPods will supoprt ATRAC. In fact, Apple will dump AAC/Fairplay and go with ATRAC3, dump iTMS and partner with Sony Connect.

MDN keyword: federal, as in let’s not make such a case out of this.

  11. It is true that Sony loses money on each console sale.

The real profit is in the games, and we all know it.

But that still didn’t stop Sony from buying Connectix’s Virtual Game Station to discontinue it.

I’d like to see this happen, and I’d like to see PSX/2/3 games compatible with the Mac, but the whole controversy over VGS has me doubting the legitimacy of this rumor.

Even if the rumor is true, I still would be surprised to see the games being supported on Mac.

I love to see it happen, but I’m not holding my breath.

  12. this is a load of crock. Sony has their own agenda, which includes a competing mp3 player. If they would do anything to merge a Playstation platform with a mp3 player, it would be with their own sucky products.

Okay, I’ve heard of a “load of crap” and a “crock of shit,” but a “load of crock” is a new one for me.

    AC wrote: “wtfreak is iPop?”

Good question, but why do you feel the need to censor an acronym? You’re too sensitive to even type a letter that might be interpreted by someone as a naughty word?

  14. “Apple may also be helping Sony with some UI design for the PS3 dashboard interface. No links, and for that I appologize, but I figured people would like to hear this information anyways. If the rumors hold true, this would be mutually benefitical for Sony and Apple in a lot of ways.”

Just LOL. Why does Sony needs Apple to design their own console? Worst kind of blog-generated BS.

  15. this would be pretty important for both these companies if true. Since the xbox will stream music from PCs (I’m assuming primarily wma files) it will be good for PS to be able to do the same thing and it will be good for Apple to help ensure that iTunes and aac don’t give up any marketshare to the Windows alternative.

  16. as daft as is sounds i think sony and apple will be working together, looking at the extra multimedia capabilities of the xbox, sony really needs to do the same but lacks the…. capability to do so, in steps apple with audio and future video (ala itunes/ilife integration) and bingo a living room box, hd dvd (or whatever side sony and apple are sitting on now) regular dvd, audio streaming, video streaming, dvr with H.264 and whatever surprises they can think up between them

  17. Hmm.. I guess Apple benefits.. *shrug.. more iPod sales.. I’d really like to hear more about getting more games on the Mac.. That would be cool.. but of course.. Sony would be priming an Apple console (basically a Mac mini that plays ps games) which would make Apple more competitive with the VAIO

Come to think of it.. this sounds like BS because no matter how you slice it, Sony would be helping Apple fight one of Sony’s businesses

  18. ‘Just LOL. Why does Sony needs Apple to design their own console? Worst kind of blog-generated BS.’

Sony may not need Apple for console desig, but as far as UI goes it might be for the better. Sony can’t do software to save their life.
