“Sources tell AppleInsider that the release of Mac OS X 10.3.9, a maintenance update to Apple’s Mac OS X 10.3 Panther operating system, is now imminent. According to reports, Apple has recently provided its developers with back-to-back builds of the system update — a tell-tale sign that development is winding down,” Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider.
“These recent builds were labeled Mac OS X 10.3.9 build 7W86 and 7W87, respectively, and weigh-in at approximately 113MB in Combo Updater-form,” Marsal reports.

What’s the point, if Tiger is really less than 2 months away?
hopefully, they’ll fix the wireless usb networking glitches with third party providers…
For those who are not gonna update just because a new OS is released
Doesn’t this show that Apple actually have the users interests at heart. They could just as easily done an M$ and said “10.3.8 is good enough” and left it alone. Instead they continue to improve it right up to the end. Could it be that there will be machine configurations that will not run Tiger, just as the Beige G3 & B/W will only run up to, and including, Jaguar? and that Apple is taking care of them too.
Just a thought
Compatibility with Tiger. If they are using two different types (Tiger using the newer) of the same software, you are going to run into problems. This is so that Panther and Tiger work together, and don’t cause problems.
slightly older g3 ibooks might have a bit of trouble with tiger? early g4 processors as well. you never know
The 10.3.9 update could be only for those not upgrading to 10.4 as Tiger is going to bring some big changes to the core of the OS. Quicktime, the media engine of OS X, goes to v7 with Tiger among other things. Even if Tiger runs on late model G3 chips, I would bet that 10.4 will be the last major OS that is ‘officially’ G3 supported.
Who in the hell still uses G3’s???
ButtPirate is an A$$!
It sets up your computer so that you have to pay the $139 to upgrade to Tiger and renders Panther useless for anything that comes out past Tigers release….
hee…heee…heee
ButtPirate,
I like my 500MHz G3 slot loading iMac. Works just fine. Runs OS X 10.3.8 like a champ, thank you. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
bawahahahhahhaahhah
iBook only went to G4 in Fall of ’03
My wife still uses a 500mhz G3 iMac. I’m hoping Tiger will work on it because I don’t want to have to give her my PowerBook now that I have a G5!
“I like my 500MHz G3 slot loading iMac. Works just fine. Runs OS X 10.3.8 like a champ, thank you.” – Jadis One
Yeah, I’m sure it runs, ROFLMAO, Like a Champ…LOL
So how does it run when you have PS, GoLive, Safari, Mail, Quark, Ill, and fetch running. At the same time?
Thats a good one Jadis, you just made my day.
“Runs like a champ”….
Maybe in the Special Computer Olympics.
133 MHz system bus could be one of the Minimum System Requirements. That would cut many older Macs out and force upgrades as Apple likes.
But hey, if you think you Mac “Runs like a champ” in 10.3.8…. then good for you, enjoy it. You most likely are not doing much more then web surfing and mail anyway, so you will not miss the new features of Tiger.
The Dude abides.
The Dude is also old skewl…. but G5 1.6 GHz with 1.25 GB RAM, 500 GB internal HDs, 300 GB external Firewire 800 drive, Dual Layer DVD Drive internal, Blue tooth, AE, 22″ NEC CRT, Airport Express BS is not quite a dinosaur.
Ohh…. magic word is “year”
like…. “This is the YEAR to upgrade to a G5 Mac and realize the power of Tiger!”
ButtPirate (nice name BTW),
Not everyone uses PS, GoLive, Quark, Ill, and fetch. I’m an Art Director. I use all those and more, but I have a Dual 2.5ghz G5 for that. My wife surfs, checks e-mail, uses Quicken, and plays Text Twist on her 500mhz G3 iMac, and for her needs, it does run like a champ.
I might add that it works better with Panther than it did with Jag, and it worked better with Jag than it did with 10.1. Maybe Tiger will give it another boost. Who knows.
Believe it or not, the world doesn’t revolve around you. There are other people who use their computers differently than you do.
