RUMOR: Apple planning Mac OS X ‘Tiger’ release for x86 PCs?

“In 2001, Transitive Technologies demonstrated a technology called ‘Dynamite’ which allowed code written for one CPU to be run efficiently on another CPU. This “translator” was said to dynamically translate and accelerate binaries — claiming to provide substantial performance over traditional “emulators”. Recent numbers claim 80% performance matching,” ‘arn’ writes for MacRumors.

“According to an unconfirmed report, there is evidence that Apple has had special internal seeds of Tiger which support this technology for the x86 platform. Beyond allowing Tiger to run on x86, perhaps more significantly is the potential to also allow existing Mac OS X applications to be run on the x86 (PC) platform without recompilation. Otherwise, requiring developers to recompile all current Mac OS X applications has been seen as a major hurdle in providing Mac OS X on the PC,” ‘arn’ writes. “Other arguments against such a transition would, of course, still hold. Apple has traditionally been a hardware company, with the bulk of revenue coming from Mac hardware. The past few years, however, has seen software become a larger portion of their revenue.”

MacDailyNews Take: “Dynamite?” If Apple did release Mac OS X ‘Tiger’ for x86, “Hydrogen Bomb” would be more like it for the PC industry. Everything would change. As MacDailyNews’ own SteveJack explained nearly a year ago, iPod does much to help free up Apple’s dependence on Mac hardware revenues to explore more radical opportunities such as this idea. 1. Increasing Apple’s marketshare is easy!

    People love Apple’s software!!

    1. Port Apple programs iLife, iWork etc. to Windows (integrate with iPod wherever possible)

    2. Sell billions of dollars worth of product to our Windows neighbours.

    3. Use this ridiculously large amount of cash revenue to lower the prices of Apple hardware significantly.

    4. Increase market share dramatically as more and more PC users notice the attractive Mac prices.

    5. Decimate the Wintel monopoly.

  2. Many have stated the problems.

What you might see is Apple turning over some of the low end of the market if sufficient demand is created by the mini. If the mini doesn’t cannibalize iBook and iMac sales and if there is very serious growth, oe can imagine Apple selling boards for carefully selected manufacturers to integrate into their product. At some point, assuming falling margins, this scenario gets attractive at the low end – but only if it hurting the rest of your line,.

So imagine a Mac mini and a Sony or HP machine that runs OS X from an Apple board, but with different design, form factors and options…

  3. If this happens (which i dont believe it will, x86 is all kinds of suck) i will be pissed^infinity. Apple has already been torquing my nips as of late. First they do away with the firewire cables with iPods, and then i open up my new Shuffle, and look at some of the “literature”, there is a screen shot of iTunes, RUNNING ON WINDOWS, this is on the back of the ad for the free music you get off of the ITMS when you get a new iPod. This is farking ridiculous, it seem Apple is loosing sight of the old, and faithful Mac users.

Personally i would like to see Apple STOP windows support when Tiger is released. Prior iPods would work on windows, but all new iPods would be Mac only (like the good ol’ days of my first gen iPod). iTunes would not be updated, nothing. By that time if people havnt come around to the better OS then fark em.

  4. Dynamite? More like Bullshit!

Rumors of MacOS-on-Intel have been flying since 1984, along with the rumors of Apple’s impending death. Neither have happened yet, and I’m not holding my breath.

  5. OS X on x86 is more or less Steve Jobs’ doomsday device. He won’t ever push that red button unless Apple is on the verge of death. Taking a look at their financials and progress over the last 3 years, that day obviously isn’t coming any time soon if ever. So neither will a version of OS X for x86 be forthcoming either.

  6. Not gonna happen!! As long as the money made from hardware greatly exceeds the money made from software, there will never be OS X on Dell NO! Apple charges $79 for apps that could cost abunch more, but they wanna let the software sell the hardware, just as in iTunes/iPod.
The uncertainty of crap from Dell, HP, and all the clones warrants this.
If Apple does this, they lower the standards that have set them apart and risk all the quality complete solutions that they offer. Intuitiveness, innovation, and quality goes out the window.
It’s not about market share…it’s about setting the standard. These guys are already rich…having Bill’s headaches is not desirable. He doesn’t have time to enjoy his money. Who will die with that satisfaction smile? Bill?? I don’t think so. After a billion, who cares how much money you make…you can’t possibly spend it.

  7. What’s so hard to imagine about Apple maintaining parallel releases of OS X for Intel? Let’s not forget that Microsoft has been doing the same thing with the Windows NT codebase and PowerPC (e.g. the XBox 2 being developed on G5s).

  8. My guess is that Apple is eyeing this for quicktime, I know that they spend allot of resources making quicktime run on windows. They may also be able to use this to make quicktime available on other platforms at minimal costs. Apple has many software titles, and would like to maximize profits. The OS will never be ported to intel equipment as long as Apple hardware includes PPC.

  9. Everyone here is assuming that osx would run on x86 h/w. When instead while reading the article we can understand that the technology would allow any code to run on any os on any h/w, so why not assume that it would be just used to allow the x86 applications to run on osx on apple ppc h/w, getting rid of all those x86 emulators all togheter. This would open a door wide open and a completely new picture would come out.

  10. I can imagine Steve face reading these posts, but.. hey, if you really port OS X to x86 what will happen? Intel profit margin will increase, Apple hardware sales department will have to fire some employees or relocate to retail stores, m$hit…well is going down for yourself, bad things, but maybe if this happen someday, you can get 90% of all scientific, artistic, creative and productive world. Maybe Macintosh could be something that the NeXt generation will not know anything but maybe we can get Jetsons world more fast! Someday we will discover aids, cancer and many diseases cure, but it is taking much long (i’m not blaming m$hit for this but….i’m tired off seeing my friends spending lots of time trying to fix…windoze peecees, precious time for us). I’m talking in SACRIFICE Macintosh for the better of the world, and i’m a long time Mac user (my first mac was a powerbook 100) and it’s not a joke.

  11. Apple is NOT a F****** hardware company anymore eggs for brains. iLife was free, then $49, now $79. MacOS updates used to be free, now $139 a year. $139 x 4 = $556, more than what Apple makes on most hardware. Get it yet??? Wake up old-time Apple-using losers who are stuck in the past. This is 2005 not 1995!
