Apple’s software business booming, up 39 percent over last year

“Apple Computer Inc., which has generated plenty of buzz with its sleek-looking Macs and iPod music players, is quietly building momentum in another category of personal computing: software. Last fiscal year, the Cupertino firm’s software sales came in at $503 million, a 39 percent improvement from the previous year,” Matthew Yi writes for The San Francisco Chronicle.

“Beyond Apple’s hugely successful iPod and online music store, software — which includes its iLife set of multimedia programs, tools for professional musicians and filmmakers and the Mac operating system — has become the fastest-growing part of its business,’ Yi writes. “Apple is also getting more help from its third-party developers, whose number has grown two-and-a-half times in the past two years to hundreds of thousands, Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said… when it comes to the bottom line, software is an attractive business for Apple because it commands much higher profit margins than hardware, said Wu.”

  1. Apple is also getting more help from its third-party developers, whose number has grown two-and-a-half times in the past two years to hundreds of thousands, Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said.

    That’s important, too.

  2. developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers

    hehehehe

  3. Finally! Someone notices that Apple’s software sales are also booming! It’s all there in the quarterly numbers, so so much for the “the Mac is a dying platform because it only has 2-3% marketshare” meme.

  4. Apple is the most underrated software company out there. Their pro apps are untouchable. I’ve been tasked with authoring professional DVDs at work, but unfortunately I’m stuck doing it on a PC. The options for professional authoring packages on Windows are abysmal. Nothing even comes close to DVD Studio Pro. Hopefully the bugginess of our existing package of choice (Adobe Encore) will make a good case for switching to the Mac. Not to mention Final Cut Pro and Motion.

  5. after returning from a xmas baja trip my friend called me to ask what video software he could buy for his pc…
i jovially rousted him saying that why doesnt he get a mac already as all the software he needs and will enjoy will be at his fingertips
a week later i get a call…”bastard!-went to the apple store just to check things out and ended up with an imac G5! best impulse buy of my life!”
needless to say but i have become his de facto tech support and walked him through the basics of itunes.imovie garageband etc
he is so stoked!he cannot believe how he just wants to come home from work and “play”-if he could just get his wife off it now!
now he wants a mini…or an ibook.

one thing pc users will not understand is the seamless intergration of
hardware and software until they use a mac.
thanks apple for enhancing peoples lives.
