RUMOR: Apple Computer building its own mobile communications carrier ‘AppleMobile’

“In a CanalPDA.com exclusive, a top Apple executive confirmed that the company plans to build its own mobile carrier. According to Albert Slope, VP of Apple’s recently created Mobile Platforms and Services business unit, ‘creating our own mobile carrier is the next logical step in our strategy of providing the Apple experience to the users of our products. We believe that existing carriers are not offering the flexibility not the performance consumers deserve, so we have decided to move forward, providing cellphone users a full, personal communications and information environent, with the user-friendliness that has become synonymous with Apple’s products and services,'” CanalPDA.com reports.

“‘On the other hand,’ says Slope, ‘the sucess achieved by the iTunes Music Store has shown us the way to go: by selling songs to consumers at $0.99 apiece, we have accumulated a valuable expertise that will be most useful for billing them talking minutes,'” CanalPDA.com reports. “It’s still unclear whether the new mobile carrier (tentative name: AppleMobile) will be reachable with any mobile phone, or its services will be reserved for the iPhone family of cellphones. Also, still no word out on the ability of forthcoming iPhones to use existing networks, or a mandatory subscription to the new AppleMobile. Major telecom analysts are split on the merits of either decision: some of them say interoperability is key for having any chance, but others consider that betting on a closed environment, if risky, may propel Apple, if successful, to the top of the world mobile telecom market.”

  1. I’m not so sure that this would be a good move on Apple’s part. Maybe because I still have nightmares about the eWorld fiasco, but it’s possible that their experiences with .Mac and iTMS have made them more confident in their ability to deliver services.

  2. We need to find out if Mr. Slope is who he says he is and if so, how did his name and title escape Apple-centric sites. Also, Apple execs rarely talk about future products or services.

  3. This would be conceiveable/interesting were apple to join an established carrier in an alliance – but no way would or could Apple compete with T-Mobile, Cingular (AT+T), et. al.

  4. That very good but one problem and that is that will apple have enough towers to stay connected. That a major problem when you on the go. The signal always fade in and out and that is, not enough towers to catch the signals.

  5. Read the first post people! MDN needs to stop propagating this bullcrap. Today is Spanish “April Fools,” for lack of a better term. If you’d click the two links at the referred site as asked, you’ll see for yourself.

  6. One of the most aged traditions of these navideos days is the one of the inocentadas ones. A somewhat gross tradition: if we stopped ourselves to think it, which commemorates the 28 of December is the slaughter of the innocents ordered by king Herodes, and, the truth, that to celebrate the anniversary of a savagery with jokes and cachondeo does not seem most correct. But good, the tradition is the tradition, so the habitual thing is that in this day the televisions, the radio transmitters and the newspapers intermingle the news with which another inocentada.

  7. I could have told you that this was fake after just reading the MDN synopsis… Apple Execs NEVER (I repeat: NEVER EVER) talk about future products. Any “news” story where they claim to have talked to an Apple Exec or a story where an exec tells them something is automatically false.

Apple does not do this at all. It would spell failure in any endeavor they try.

Not to mention that this is the most far out rumor I’ve ever heard…
