Report: Apple may launch European iTunes Music Store by mid-June

“Apple could be ready to launch its iTunes Music Store (ITMS) in Europe by the middle of June, sources said to be familiar with the company’s plans have claimed,” Tony Smith reports for The Register. “They reckon that the Mac maker may now have secured licences from the major labels and others it needs in order to open ITMS to UK and other European buyers… Whenever ITMS Europe launches, it will come after Napster UK, which opened its online store last week, and Sony Connect, which is scheduled to go live on 7 June.”

  1. Man, I just checked my account history a la Apple enews. WARNING: ITMS is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. I might have to put MYSELF on an allowance ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  2. Great…. I just got a nice email from Napster.ca asking me to check out their new web music site in Canada. C’mon Apple how about us up north? Mind you given that a judge here said it was OK to download why should I worry?

  3. I think is not really important that other services start first, for Apple it’s more important to get it right.
Besides it’s important that apple have competition, we don’t want it to become the microsoft of music stores, do we?

  5. Question!!!

When is the UK = Europe?

So what if Napster is in the UK. When Apple states that iTMS will open up in Europe, it will open up in Europe not just the UK. I am assuming the reason it took Jobs so long was that he wants to release iTMS for all of the major countries in Europe, not just the UK.

  6. attention first-posting dingbats:

you’re not impressing anyone. I’ve been here countless times with the opportunity to be the ‘”firts post” (a bit sad, really), but somehow I have resisted the “urge” every time. If you really need need this kind of attention, I can direct you to a few sandboxes nearby.

  7. If iTMS Europe has a special date near june or july then it is WWDC and nothing else. Period.
I know that Steve wants to say the words “and this is available today!”
at the keynote of WWDC 2004.
I am going to be there and here those words.

  8. Finland has a good point, but it’s also possible that Steve wants to say, “And in its first week, the European iTMS sold x songs!”

Last year, iTMS only got a passing comment: that it had sold its 5 millionth song. My guess is, the WWDC keynote will be devoted to Mac OS X and (maybe) new hardware, with just a quick note about Apple’s other fronts (read: “music”).

  9. Ooohhh…
    I like that one more thing thing ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
    It is so cool ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  10. IIRC, Steve hasn’t done that “one more thing” bit for a long time now. It’d be nice for its return starting with G5 on all Macs except iBooks. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
