Jobs: Apple vs. Apple ‘could drag on for years – it’s unfortunate because we love the Beatles’

  1. Dave H: “Sir Paul has done a lot of good for the poorer members of UK society, hence the knighthood.”

Your statement would hold water if it weren’t for the fact that just about all English performers of some standing have been granted a knighthood. There are literally hundreds! Among the more popular are the following:

    Sir Charles Chaplin
    Sir Alfred Hitchcock
    Sir Elton John
    Sir Ridley Scott
    Sir Sean Connery
    Sir Ian Holm
    Sir Michael Caine
    Sir Ian McKellen
    Sir Anthony Hopkins
    Sir Richard Attenborough
    Sir Peter Graves
    Sir Alec Guinness
    Sir Rex Harrison
    Sir Ben Kingsley
    Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber
    Sir Roger Moore
    Sir Laurence Olivier

The list of far less-popular entertainers who have been knighted takes up many pages. Perhaps the humour that Americans find in the “Sir” is a product of the whimsy with which that title is distributed – not disrespect to the title itself. By bestowing that honor on whatever popular entertainer that the royal family decides they want to entertain at the time, they diminish its meaning.

  2. “Are you telling me that Apple Computer Inc is the Ghandi of the Corporate world…” – Lisa

No. No person on this feedback list has ever made such a statement or asserted something so ridiculous. Your argument holds no water. That isn’t a license to start berating people with outrageous statements such as that one. Educate yourself about the issue before posting such nonsense.

  3. Atomic Bomb

You seem to be under the misconception that The Crown (ie the institution of the Monarchy) has any real power in the UK these days. The Queen does not decide who gets Honours of any level, it is decided by a Government-run committee that reviews recommendations put forward by politicians and members of the British public. The Knighthood may be, like many things in my country, a leftover from medieval times, but with the exception of the Peerage, which is just a way for the Government of the day to stuff the Upper House of Parliament with it’s own supporters, it is simply the highest form of recognising people who we feel have made a contribution. I am sure that most other countries in the Western world have a similar system, they just add letters after the name of whoever the Honour is given to. As for your point that the Knighthood being exclusively given to entertainers, you seem to miss the fact that most of the recipients are people you have never heard of in America, since they tend to be politicians, civil servants, industrial leaders etc.

BTW, Neither Sir Anthony Hopkins nor Sir Sean Connery are English. One is from Wales, the other from Scotland. Both would be offended if you called them English.

  4. Dave,

No misconceptions here. Never said knighthood was exclusively given to entertainers. I just said it was given out with excessive whimsy. And it is.

I also stated that just about all English performers of some stature have been knighted – not that all knighted performers were English. There is a clear distinction there.

  5. AB

The Arts are important here. It’s just about the only thing we are consistently good at. In some countries the only way you get public recognition for your actions is being good with a gun. I’m glad that’s not the case in the UK.

  6. The suit is codwallop and by necessity the whole defense and counteraction will be likewise. But it is nothing to do with the Beatles’ choices; it has to do with some law-head believing he must file the suit in order to avoid looking lax or somehow failing to defend a legitimate claim. This is not a legitimate claim; it is codwallop from end to end.

  7. Yoko … I mean Lisa,

    What does “scrool up” mean?

Besides your occasional incoherance and utter distaste for factual information, we do find your posts very funny! Keep them up. We can all stand a good laugh or two (or several dozen at your expense) every now and then.

The “thread” – as you call it – is not about the misinformation you have flooded your mind with. It is about the story at the top of the page. Read it. Apple isn’t in the business of producing music. That is the crux of the argument. Were you to remove your raging blinders for even a moment, perhaps you would see that.

And why not answer Noboby’s question? Why isn’t Apple Records suing the plethora of other record companies that are strikingly similarly named? Huh? Why?

(I don’t really expect an answer out of you. But I’m sure another foolish and hilarious post will follow!)

  8. Hey Atomic- it turns out that science has shown that humans are
genetically ‘pre-wired’ with the ability tio read and understand typos–so how come you had such a problem with ‘scrool up’? Hey and if Apple took the name Bad Apple and used Adam and Eve as
their logo maybe Apple records would not have sued Bad Apple Computers either. There is a reason people like you cant get into law shcool.

  9. Can’t get into law school, eh? What a strange thing to say.

My clients (not to mention my colleagues) would be surprised to hear that I didn’t get into law school two decades ago.

By the way, I knew what you meant when you typed “scrool up”. I was mocking you.

And you still fail to address the issue at hand.

  10. Concerning Sir Alec Guiness’s knighthood:

He didn’t receive it just for being an entertainer. Rather, he received it for single-handedly repairing the relations between the UK and Mexico.

    How, you ask?

He was attending, on behalf of the UK, a conference in Mexico that had to do with the movie business. Relations between the UK and Mexico were at an all-time low, and thus he was scheduled to speak last at the opening ceremonies. Although he didn’t speak Spanish, he had his speech translated and learned it phonetically, as a courtesy to his hosts.

NOT ONE other representative whose native language was not Spanish did that.

Overnight, the attitude of Mexico – and Mexicans – toward the UK changed, as it was well-known that Guiness did not speak Spanish; the effort he undertook was obvious.

Within a few months, he was notified that he was on the Honours list.

Now THAT kind of nobility is worth recognition (not excluding other types).

  11. I didn’t think that Paul McCartney (who doesn’t use his title of Sir BTW, the media does) associates with Apple Corps. Instead he holds the publishing rights to a number of Beatles songs through his own publishing company. The rights to the Beatles catalog are owned by Micheal Jackson and Yoko Ono, which I’m not sure if they fall under the Apple umbrella or not. Paul has more money than he knows what to do with so I don’t think his association (nor the other members of the Beatles band *Ringo*) has anything to do with this lawsuit.

I live in down the street from Paul in Tucson, AZ…nice guy who doesn’t deserve your uninformed negative comments.
