Dr. Bombay Computer M.D. offers his take on Macs, viruses and more

Dr. Emilio Bombay writes a column for The Star-Telegram called, “Dr. Bombay Computer M.D.” that is an oftentimes humorous takeoff of advice columns. Dr. Bombay specializes in berating his questioners. Often, the questions themselves turn out to hold the answers, while Dr. Bombay’s responses provide other insights by highlighting stereotypes, sort of Archie Bunker-style. We thought you’d like to read a particular question and Dr. Bombay’s answer from his column, dated today.

Dear Dr. Bombay: I remember the fun we had doing design work on the Macintosh while the DOS and Windows guys were still trying to determine whether to right-click, left-click or go get a cup of coffee. Now my eMac does my genealogy, bank account, bill paying, shopping, research, snapshot filing and correspondence. It seems to me that a real computer-assistance column would help users in doing these things instead of having to continually tell them how to get rid of pop-up ads and strange viruses.
— Mac Daddy

Dear Daddy: Well, yeah, but this isn’t a real computer-assistance column. Haven’t you figured that out? And why waste valuable time and space writing about Macs? They account for only a minuscule share of the computer market. Even industry analysts who aren’t shills or just plain drunk are saying that Linux-based systems are right on Apple’s heels and will probably pull ahead next year. Can the Commodore 64 be far behind? In this economy, when somebody who refuses to use Windows can drop two grand on a new Mac or buy a Linux box and a giant bag of Chee-tos for less than 300 bucks at Wal-Mart, which way do you think those market-share numbers are headed?

Dr. Bombay’s column can be read here.

  1. Well, all you have to do is look at who he is appealing to here. Anyone that would buy a computer at Wal-Mart doesn’t have a whole lot on the ball anyway. That seems to be this joker’s target audience anyway since in his words, “this isn’t a real computer-assistance column.” Now THAT is quite an understatement…

    Appearantly, neither has he.

Hey Cheetos boy, get your hand outta the Cheeto’s bag, and keep it off your crankyanker, and wake up. Linux overtake Mac???

    quote:

” or buy a Linux box and a giant bag of Chee-tos for less than 300 bucks at Wal-Mart”

    I rest my case.

Dr. Bombay, head back to the Bombay India school of cheese weasles and x386 pc repair and call me when you can get a real machine. You Bill Gates knob bobbin dork.

  3. Jason,

Bombay IS an idiot, however, be careful what you say. If he was from India, he would have a clue about computers. Emilio is not an indian name.

Regardless, racism of any kind does not belong here (or anywhere).

  4. I wasnt being racist. I was mearly commenting that WHATEVER school this id10t went to (if any at all), its sure to be some a$$backwards, redneck, hillbilly type of school in the back woods some where. In fact, its so far off the map they might even find Ussama hiding out there and playing cards with Jimmy Hoffa. Classes are taught every 3rd monday by Aunt Mae, and networking is done by Bubba and Mary Joe….but anyways.. I digress.

No kidding that this idiot isnt really from India. God, I’d hate to disrespect India ( who does hold nuclear weapons ) and say this idiot was from there. As a matter of fact, I am CONVINCED that Dr. Bombay, whoever he is, is the true racist as evidenced by his name. And further more I’m sure that he’s some jerk that could never hold a job in a REAL computer job because he clearly doesnt know what the hell he’s talking about. You know I know guys like this, Ive worked with them in stores before, and they’ve ALL been fired for their “humor” with customers. They dont know what they’re doing, so they joke about it and get cruel about it because they dont.

    Jezus…grow another lair of skin.

  5. Oh yeah…and I forgot my main point. I know he couldnt be from india because as you point out he WOULD know what he’s doing. My point is that he’s some flake from here in the states thats undereducated, and UNDERTALENTED.

    Ooops…was that too harsh?

  6. Man, this Bombay guy is a real *sshole! I just read his column and he bashes everybody just like the computer guy in the old Saturday Night live skits. Maybe it’s supposed to be humor, but I never found that bereating someone who needs help to be funny.

I doubt he is from India, and by the way all indians are not computer experts, don’t belive me, call Dell’s tech support. The reason why PC’s and Linux are more popular with India is because they’re cheap (both the computer and the people). I should know, my Dad was from India and I never was allowed to spend money on what I wanted till I got old enought to tell him to shut up.

    never too harsh… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
This idiot probably writes drivel like this to get people to read his column. He probably writes for those checkout line tabloids which claim “France surrrenders to N. Korea” and “I had an Alien Baby.” People buy up this crap. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

Ben is right, not all people from India have a clue about computers, but my point was to avoid any form of racism. even small amounts could escalate.

  8. News flash!!!

Dr. Bombay was the “witch-doctor” from the old TV series called Bewitched which starred Elizabeth Montgomery. This “Dr. Bombay” should be commended for maintaining the quack image that the original Dr.Bombay created so well!

    I think he’s GREAT!!!!!

What the series creators think about remains to be seen.

  9. Quit baggin on the good Doctor. He dishes out the same kind of “f**k you” Mac rhetoric as he did in this article to windbloze users every week. If anyone here actually read his column you would know that.

  10. D.R. Bombay is obviously a Pro-Microsoft Bigot… one of the other comments was to steer clear of Palm products, though they make up the dominate share of PDA computing and are seamlessly compatible with just about everything in existence!

    what a dope!
