You can use USB solid-state drives as boot devices (there are already a lot of “keychain” drives on the market that do so)
If it’s Citizen, then how about using the Eco-Drive solar battery technology…?
And how about FireWire?

Your BIOS needs to support it, but if it does, it can boot from the device (or any USB keychain flash memory device) if the appropriate files exist.
